Her being a lesbian doesn't even matter anymore, her whirlwind romance with an Imperial Investigator ended with replacing her memories with those of brutally killing Aphra and destroying the corpse so Vader would think she's dead since Vader considers Aphra a loose end.
Plus she's spent the last 4 issues with a bomb in her head because another criminal thought filming it would be funny

There's a lot less editor protection around her and Aphra's cast is in actual danger. With the vast majority of other Star Wars characters, you know that they won't be maimed or killed because they're due to appear in movies or TV shows. That seriously limits what can be done with them. They can't have major personal growth, they can't die.
Aphra gives us characters who can be heavily altered whenever the story calls for it. The only concern with her is whether she fits into the overall Star Wars universe. Her entire cast could be lined up against a wall and shot without breaking canon.
The writing isn't that much better than any other Star Wars thing, but it's free to do whatever it likes, allowing for longer story arcs.
