The CG and photoreal pokemon designs are mostly great Charizard is kind of shit but the rest so far have all been just fine. The attention they've put into the world is great.

The writing and casting is the problem - this is clearly going to be generic abominable hollywood LCD kikery. Some random nigger faggot as the straight man (read: doesn't need to do anything but sit there, which is good because that's all he can do) to cartoon Ryan Reynolds, who will doubtless be talking over every scene in the movie. The way to do this was with an actual CHILD, ideally actually Japanese/Asian, reacting to some gruff Detective Pikachu. Not just the twinkiest rent-boy Producer Schlomo could find opposite the hollywood FOTM 'funny guy'.
