There was an easy out for all this early on, with some ripoff called "Filly Funtasia" or something.
The mods had three choices:
1. Keep MLP banned while allowing a shittier ripoff of the show to be discussed, which would highlight the arbitrary and pointless nature of the ban, thus making them appear foolish.
2. Double down on a pointless rule by spending even more time and effort making sure the ripoff show was banned as well, despite it not actually having anything to do with MLP, thus making them appear foolish.
3 Admit that the ban was foolish, rescind it, and have everyone get on with their lives.
Unsurprisingly, they went with 2.

I think it's because Gen IV MLP pretty much nailed the mark on pony design for children's shows. Because remember, every prior gen was still considerably more horse-like in appearance. The current series is pretty much a step removed from chibi.
