How did this show afford to have such detailed animation? Looking back, it's shocking how many frames each scene has, from the first season to the last. Most shows of its time didn't have animation on its level either. So how did they do it? I'd really like to know, if anyone has the answer.

Because quality.

It's called talent

Wasn't the creator a control freak/perfectionist? That probably explains it.

It was co-produced with Danny Antonucci's studio, a.k.a Cartoon

Soul

God I loved this cartoon so much

I hate that there's not only no shows like this anymore, but nobody seems to want them back anyway. I feel like wacky cartoony cartoons with detailed, fluid animation are going to permanently be lost to time as a cloud of faux anime and beanmouths overtakes the medium

Was Double-D gay?

he forgot to bring the cupcakes of sorryness

Maybe?
But if Ed and Eddy managed to fool him into thinking his parents were going crazy with his "chores" and he wasn't just playing along at the end, he may not be quite as smart as he seems.

This level of consistent animation quality in a fucking TV cartoon is actually pretty absurd. The second one in particular looks like it could have been out of a theatrical short. People often overlook season 5, but I think they used the new digital technology to actually, shockingly do what animators always could have done with it; produce higher-quality animation. Seriously, season 5's animation is a slight step up over even the rest of the show.

based.

Antonucci also owns the exclusive rights to EEnE, not CN

>Seriously, season 5's animation is a slight step up over even the rest of the show.
i thought the same thing. it was really surprising to see them using that new style of animation so well.

Honest to goodness quality, which explains the long gaps between airdates.

It's kinda incredible how Antonucci managed to get Cartoon Network to fund a show outside of their supervision and do it all under his direction, in his own studio, in fucking Canada of all place with such an erratic production schedule.
It feels like something that's impossible to attempt nowadays.

I know that fucking feeling all too well, user. it's genuinely frustrating to me.

This is great

I didn't notice the gaps as a kid which shows that even with a good reason for long season gaps CN still aired new episodes more consistently than Steven Universe

did this guy work on the show?

I think CN and Nick were just doing this weird-ass thing back in the day when they would purposely delay the shit out of the American release of cartoons for whatever the fuck frustrating reason. Like I recall that new episodes of Fairly Odd Parents would air in China years ahead of it getting released locally. I watched a pirated version of the EEnE movie like a year before it was officially out.

Or maybe I have the world's gayest memory, but I'm pretty sure CN/Nick were just on some stupid Steven Universe-tier release schedule at the time despite the episodes being finished.

EEnE was the last cartoon I can remember having, like, the musical cues to go with the cartoon antics. Like a musical sound effect for someone tip-toeing and such. Even for the time, it was old-school as fuck.

It was old-school while still being unique and bringing something new to animation

I remember that, too, watching an Australian rip of The Big Picture Show, which I heard about years later on the internet. The ridiculous CN/Nick scheduling was no bullshit. They're mismanaged networks, run by brainless moneymen. Check out Aqua Teen's arbitrary cancellation, for example. All the cartoon channels stay afloat because they have, in essence, a captive audience of kids.

You can say the same thing about John Kricfalusi, and that didn't work out for him so well.

It has less to do with being a perfectionist and more to do with being highly competent & good at organizing your crew. I get the feeling AKA Cartoon was a pretty close-knit group that knew how to work really dynamically together.

All that after he was previously known only for doing grossout adult cartoons that were extremely niche.
In the few good interviews of Danny, he's always been pretty vague about how he got the green light. He must've had some really good leverage to get CN to support such a unique show right out the gate.

I remember sometimes in australian foxtel out of the blue, when reruns were supposed to air a brand new episode ive never seen would show and then like a year later it would air again on CNFridays as a "brand new episode" and i was like hang on what

>deep yellow teeth
I can completely understand why he'd be dodging those kisses all the time. Definitely not gay, just has a decent sense of hygiene.

...

I love how EEnE did exaggerated poses & expressions while staying so grounded in the characters. You can really feel the characters stretching and tweaking into those poses, and they all have different body language that plays off each other.

So many other cartoonists get lazy and do the OK KO thing where they just show off a string of wacky faces & poses, and the character who's doing it doesn't matter.

Don't forget that he also holds all the rights to the show, meaning the network can't rape it a la PPG.

What, you don't want to see Ed, Edd 'n' Eddy: Scam!

i'm gonna fuckin PUKE

Anyone got that reaction imafe of Eddy making a face where he looks like he's reacting in jouous pleasure with his eyes closed?

I remember that too, specifically getting the Australian rips from Yea Forums. I remember a lot of the board being fucking pissed at the delay.
Still can't believe that BPS aired 10 years ago now. People talk about how EEnE is 20 this year, but it boggles my mind more that its 10th ENDING anniversary is also this year.

Where the fuck did the time go?
Take heart knowing the remake would have even worse art.
