He is just so bland. He is supposed to be an artist but it is never explored. He used to miss his country but the conflict was resolved in a few issues with no concequencies. And it feels like he is never able to make decisions for himself. Typical Claremont scene: When Storm/Cyclops, Wolverine and Nightcrawler discuss something, he just stands there silent. Sometimes his only line in an issue is "White Wolf" or"Lenin's Ghost" and thats it. The only interesting thing about him was his relationship with Kitty, but it was dropped as well.

Cable and Hope told everyone about it and Bishop never denied it, the X-Men just don't care. Hell, the X-Men saw Bishop try to kill Hope and almost kill Charles Xavier with his own eyes, and Wolverine's X-Force saw him team up with Stryfe.

I'd read the intention for Piotr was him to be the Ben Grimm of the X-Men but it clearly never worked out that way, what happened?

For one, Ben works because the FF dynamics are different. The X-Men simply weren't a family the way the FF were, Ben was the gruff but loving uncle to the family unit, Piotr didn't have a family to gel around in quite the same way.

I also think making him the sensitive artist was too on-the-nose. Ben was both rough on the outside but an adorable lug in the inside, Piotr wore his heart on his sleeve and it just wasn't interesting, if anything it was irritating.

And, of course, no pathos. Ben was stuck in the rocky form while Piotr could not only transform back and forth but could do so instantaneously with ease. Maybe, maybe if the transition took a long time, left him weakened, was painful, there would've been something to work with. All too often, Piotr would be mopey with no good reason to be mopey which made him even more irritating.

I consider him a failed character that should've been jettisoned long ago, but has the luck to be permanently associated with some of the best superhero comics ever made so we're stuck with him forever.
