It's made enough important animation pictures to influence not one but three generations into valuing quality cartoons. This is especially because you as an adult should watch cartoons with your kid as a bonding experience, rather than place them in front of the TV and walk about your day.

However, modern day Russia is two generations removed from those times and while you still get gems like Masha and the Bear and the stop-motion Ugly Duckling, it's become very much a kid's thing because of the falling standards of family in my home country.

For various reasons the american culture puts high value in realism portrayed in art and works of fiction, and the "real" itself, consequently believing something that's stylized and imaginative as childish, never to be taken seriously.
Problem is the US has been influencial in that regard, so other countries picked that up as well. Due to US' use of the medium as something only for children, marketed as such, and the power it had over worldwide television the concept of animation has for a long time been sunk into the rut for many western countries, preventing many potential artists from exploring art that's either not realistic or some money laundering tool.

Animation is an artform. Art isn't just for a particular group of people, art isn't just for mature people, art isn't just high class paintings that you look at while spouting bullshit in order to raise your social standing. That has never been the point of art.

Hard to say. I'd say that in Germany animation is generally considered kids stuff, especially when it comes to movies. Lower ranked animation is generally shown around 12pm or earlier and most of the time there is only one screening.

Some examples that pop up are Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away and Spider-Verse.

If it's a Pixar/Disney or DreamWorks flic, it's a whole different thing for obvious reasons.
