Its more hit and miss than Animaniacs, and the show is even more outdated. It was mostly decent and not very memorable. Had some good ideas but mostly bad ideas. The specials are just better than most of the show.

This was my biggest issue with it. At one point, I think when trunks powered up to fight cell, when the videos started to get long as fuck and fight scenes were getting played fairly straight. It just kind of struck me that it felt like nothing more than quippy dbz

Behold, 25 minutes of the most unfunniest garbage I've ever had the misfortune of witnessing. It's seriously so fucking bad, not a single thing in it made me even smirk. It's literally throwing a bunch of random shit at a wall and hoping some of it sticks, but none of it does. It's so fucking bloated with meaningless reference material, and it gives the LE SO RANDUMB XD vibe.

The shit that's been going on since late 2014-ish has been steeped in politics and isn't "escapist" in the same way shit like rage comics or egoraptor are.

the Abridged Series "genre" is dead. It peaked with YGOA and DBZA. N other reached even half the notability those two had.

That said, abridged series suffer from the same problem most 00s comedy had, and that's two main traits: One, writers figuring out that it's suddenly okay to lampoon your own genre, but they usually did it so by having the characters loudly pointing out the clichés in lengthy spiels clearly directed at the audience; basically, explaining the joke BEFORE telling the joke in an attempt at appearing smarter than anybody else. And always with that awkward, weirded-out tone.

And two, excess of non-sequiturs. I might be alone in this one, but after replaying quotes from Portal, I noticed how dated the humor can come off. Especially in that DLC where it was only Cave Johnson and featured JK Simmons going in speedy rants about ridiculous stuff in one breath while acting as if everything's normal. I think that's very 00s. Like some turn-of-the-century version of Monthy Python, except more wordy.

Those are just my impressions. I think a Yea Forums-related work that really captures the 00s essence (and dateness) is Kim Possible.

"My Baby Boy" was amusing, albeit just a slightly-exaggerated version of what actually happens. The "problem" with the show is it moved from absurd character reinterpretations to just being a fairly faithful (albeit rude and self-aware) retelling to DBZ.

I prefer it this way.

I never realized how bad until they revived/rebooted it and it was even worse.

The fights were good, but nowadays we can just skip to the animated part of Death Battle or One Minute Melee for the same effect.

The original characters and reinvented SMRPG characters sucked.

Grim Tales was always fucking shit.

The animation sucks, but I still find it pretty funny.

It was mostly pop-culture references and parodies, only instead of being 'hey member the etc' or something else skin-deep, their stuff showed genuine insight into what they referenced, and was funny even if you'd never heard of the thing. The Beef Stroganauts thing they did for Two More Eggs is a good example; it's funny in its absurdity even if you don't realize it's about those toys from the nineties that had goo or slime come out. Relatedly, they refused to date themselves by doing something recent. They very, very rarely poked fun at something from that year or even that decade.

Their comedy and writing is also character-driven. Cool Tapes is a good example; it starts with Homestar defacing Marzipan's wall for no reason (something he would do) and proceeds with everyone acting like themselves, with a story and jokes emerging.

Honestly, I would hold HomestarRunner up as a great example in writing and comedy in general.

It kind of bothers me that he never really did anything with these characters. He released a teaser or two that showed that he had backstories and stuff for them.
