Hey, it's not like it was bad; it was just completely unnecessary, barely had anything to do with the first two (outside of two or three scenes with Andy could have been a completely different set of toys on their own adventure), and ruined the mystique of the series as being pioneers of 3D animation. Now they're just... another Disney franchise.

Did you not watch TS2 or 3? They're not the same at all. Pete was a man who was just stuck in his ways. He'd likely never been played with and never left his box. He didn't know what he was missing and didn't want to find out. He was happy to be moved to the museum because it was just another box.
Conversely Lotso had been played with but lost the person who he loved. He realised when he was replaced how meaningless he was and was determined to make his life as comfortable as possible for as long as possible by any means. Since he didn't matter no one else could matter so fuck them.
That's why they got what they deserved. Pete finally got playtime, even if he might not have enjoyed it to begin with. He was almost a tragic character in being a toy that was destined to never be played with, so got a good-ish ending.
Lotso was a dickhead who decided if he doesn't matter nothing did, screwing over his near friends, so he got strapped to the front of a garbage truck. Because fuck Lotso.

Pete was a being that never had gotten loved, and had to imagine love. To create a crude replication of love. To be behind glass, admired by many rather than have a close connection.
Lotso had had a deep love but then lost it. His actions were to recapture that feeling but he had become cynical about what it was. To him it was something he could monopolize, and regulate. He could never really be happy again. He was like an addict trying to get that first fix, but also jaded with the system.

Toy Story 2 didn't sacrifice Buzz for a cheap gimmick. In fact they gave us 2 Buzzes to keep the character and the joke.

Except that ignores the reasoning behind each and the lessons they taught. Stinky Pete didn't know what being played with was and was happy to just be in a box forever watching the world go by. He was always unwanted by his nature, no one wanted a Stinky Pete doll; he's the only one still in his box notice. In a way he got what he deserved, a kid that will care for him and play with him. He got the best end of a Toy Story antagonist.
That's nothing like Lotso.

Whenever I rewatch TS1+2 it's usually a coin flip if I throw TS3 at the end and I now think it's because of that Spanish Buzz gimmick. Just threw his character in the bin for a joke you'd expect from the fourth season of an animated kid's show, not from a feature film from a legendary studio.
