What animated movies should be in the criterion collection

It's a shame that there's only three animated movies that got the criterion treatment, and one was only done because every Wes Anderson movie needs a criterion release for some reason

Feherlofia
probably some anime should be too.
would stop motion count? Jan Svankmajer's Alice would be a good release.

Twice Upon a Time

GKIDS is already like Criterion for animation.

I like this idea, include both versions.

Both?

>What animated movies should be in the criterion collection
Almost nothing Western.

Akira
Satoshi Kon's filmography
Spirited Away
The Tale of the Princess Kaguya
Every Ralph Bakshi film but Cool World, but especially Hey Good Lookin
Ernest and Celestine
Into the Spider-Verse
Ghost in the Shell
The Iron Giant
Yellow Submarine
Grave of the Fireflies
Belladonna of Sadness
etc

Great list, also did you know akira DID have a criterion release, only it was laser disc so it doesn't matter anymore

>akira DID have a criterion release, only it was laser disc
Yeah, I did know that. Very unfortunate. I don't know why they haven't readded it already. It's my favorite movie.

Anything by Bruno Bozzetto or Ralph Bakshi. Picha, maybe? Nah, just stick with the first two.

>Beauty and the Beast
>WALL-E
>Toy Story
>Your Name
>Fantasia
>Isle of Dogs
>Something from Laika, probably Kubo or Coraline

Plus everything this guy mentioned

The Thief & The Cobbler director's cut, all finished up and remastered.

Tiff between the creators, one wanted it to be squeaky-clean, the other wanted coarser humor and such. After the cruder version played in theaters (presumably) and a few times on HBO, the other guy put out a version with all that removed, and that's been the only version shown and distributed ever since.

>Feherlofia
This, especially since it's currently being remastered. Would also be great to get some bonus material or commentary for it while the creator's still alive.

I think isle of dog's will get a criterion collection though

Is Spider-Verse really that good? I have no particular bias against it but I'm just surprised that a superhero cartoon is getting such unanimous acclaim

It’s weird because it comes down to rights and the director signing off on it. Otomo and Funimation have fought about a remaster and Funi won out. Now that they’re opposing media companies don’t expect Criterion to get it back unless everyone agreees.

I think it's because of the animation aspect

The Warner Archive DVD has both versions on it.

>Into the Spider-Verse

What a trend-worshipping faggot, you are.

into the spider verse was amazing but not criterion amazing

Disney/Pixar movies don't need the Criterion treatment, especially newer ones. They already get get treated well for home video release. Maybe something like The Black Cauldron could use it though.

>Into the Spider-Verse
>"I JUST SAW THIS MOVIE FIVE MINUTES AGO AND LIKED IT SO IT SHOULD BE IN THE CRITERION COLLECTION!!!!!!!!!"

Dumbass.

Hot take: The Prince of Egypt

This is a ice water take

Yeah, I put it on there because of the animation, but it is really good. It's similar to the Sam Raimi trilogy (and Wonder Woman) in that its a superhero movie that feels like an actual movie.

I knew I was forgetting something

Song of the Sea

>GKIDS is already like Criterion for animation.
Sure, if you don't mind the fact that GKIDS only releases animated films that are recently made.

Shrek 2

this

Adventures of Prince Achmed (though it's public domain and paying $30 on a Criterion edition would be a retarded investment for anyone who isn't made of money)
Akira (though I think Criterion gave it some sort of VHS release)
Perfect Blue
Robot Carnival
Belladonna of Sadness
Fritz the Cat
Heavy Traffic (fuck just give Bakshi an eclipse set)
Secret of Kells
Song of the Sea
Tragedy of Man
Feherlofia

>mass market shit
Not allowed in the official Pretentious Bros club

The Congress by Ari Folman

The Last Unicorn

Song of the Sea, and Tragedy of Man.

>When the Wind Blows
>The Plague Dogs
>The Mascot (99% of you don't know about this one)
>Gulliver's Travels
>Mr. Bug Goes to Town
>Twilight of the Cockroaches

And I even got a Jap movie in there for you weebs, damn.

Coraline, Mind Game, Fritz the Cat

End of Evangelion too

I can't believe I forgot that, Evangelion is my favorite series.

>Akira (though I think Criterion gave it some sort of VHS release)
I'm fairly certain it was Laserdisc

It was actually said earlier in the thread

Who Framed Roger Rabbit
Dante's Inferno (the puppet one)
Interstellar 5555

It's in my top 5 anime. The movie is still one of the greatest pieces of animation I've ever seen.

Wings of Hoeannamise is also great.
