Just saw this today. Its not nearly as good as the first one. It took 20-30 minutes to really get going and the jokes wern't nearly as good as the first one. I'm guessing they didnt have the same writers/song writers as the first because everything just felt sup par to the original.

I agree the movie started out painfully slow, but when it got going, I enjoyed it.

I think the generally agreed upon reason is that they didn't bother to advertise it. The first thread was had about this movie was full of "wait, this is out already?" and "there's a Lego Movie 2?".

I liked Brie because she sounded different to most characters playing the bubbly type, there was actually some sass to her voice. Then Strong comes in doing one of her 3 voices and ruins it.

I didnt like Sweet Mayhem much. She wasn't bad and her design was cool but she didnt feel like she got characterized enough.

Ahe completely stole the show. Easily the best new character. I thought she was going to be dumb when she was first introduced but then she immediately got the best song in the movie and they got to show off how she moved and yeah, I was sold

Alright, I've been thinking about this movie since seeing it.

I think overall it's pretty enjoyable, but it's not even in the same league as the first one. I think the biggest thing that hurts it though is that its simultaneously more and less self-aware than the first one.

Its referential of its status as a sequel and the added songs, but it's also less clever and more saccharine than the first one.

It felt a little cut rate. Cast members were conspicuously absent (like Will Ferrel only having 4 lines and never being on screen, Bad Cop is on screen but doesn't speak, and Benny doesn't have many lines.) At no point is there anything that's as visually impressive as anything in the first one either, like the ocean or some of the chase sequences. No shots really stand out or anything, except maybe some stuff in the Queen's song.

As for the plot, I think it was hurt by trying to follow in the footsteps of what the first one set up. In the first one you dont get the reveal of what the movie is actually about until very late, but in this one, you pretty much know upfront that it's about the boy's conflicts with his sister.

The mom was awful and embarrassing. The Dad in the first one had jokes but he wasn't treated as a joke. Making the mom deliver "stepped on a Lego" jokes undercut what she was supposed to represent in the story, and it'd have been much better if she was taken seriously.

The songs feel like a studio mandate in response to Everything is Awesome, and really vary in quality from excellent (everything with the Queen) to filler.

Rex getting two backstory reveals could have been handled better but I'm not sure how. In the same vein, the reveal of the queen's true form basically happened twice and was dulled the second time - the audience should have first seen what she was when the kid found out, not when Wildstyle did.

Its frustrating because I liked it a lot but it really felt more like a TV movie or direct to DVD special than a true successor

Finally saw it today.
It's not as tight as the first film but there was a lot of good stuff in there.
They actually went with the "Villains Are Doing Nothing Wrong, It's The Protagonists Who Have Fucked Up" storyline. I've been shortchanged on that so many times it was satisfying to see it played through.
I really liked Lucy's arc and all the new characters where great. Watevra, Mayhem and Rex where the best, and I liked the ice-cream dude too. It reminded me how much I just enjoyed being in the Lego world in the first one.
The songs where weird at first but they helped move the plot along nicely.

It's bizzare. I remember seeing trailers in the Cinema over a year ago, and then there was nothing new.

There was definitley a moment where Watevra reformed and I though "Look at that CGI".

I'd heard there was no BadCop/ScribbleCop outside of that one second appearance at the start.

It makes sense that he might be less involved in the story but considering how many minor characters reappeared more prominently, his absence felt odd.

Also Ghost!Vitruvius getting knocked off screen in one of the first shots and NEVER being mentioned again.

I did some thinking about why I found Queen Watevra to be so damn hot despite basically being a blob of Lego bricks and, besides the obvious answer of her having some genuinely hot expressions with some real sexy eyes and a sassy confident voice, I think I figured it out. She's also good at pinpointing exactly what you love, expressing a genuine shared excitement and seeming like she just wants to geek out with you. For example: "Benny do you like spaceships because I think they are great" and "Ooh I loved him in Beetlejuice!"

And yeah it is also the sexy voice and eyes.

YES. Yes I did. It's... different. Like, it is to the regular Lego games what Mario Odyssey is to Mario Galaxy - it's still got a story, but it's WAY more based around mini sidequests.

I'm not sure what to make about it yet though. It doesn't seem as fun - the sidequests seem super simple (although there's almost 500) and the levels are a lot more bare, but on the other hand, being properly open makes it look so much better.

Also, Unikitty's VA (not DiCicco) is AWFUL! Not only does it not sound anything like her, but it's just an annoying voice in general. A pity too, because the other voices aren't bad.

Further update, since I'm now a bit more into the game,

So when I said "sidequest", it's really more like hidden bricks. There's a few sidequests, but the majority are not. Really, it's a lot like the overworld parts of the regular Lego games - lots to find, but it's mostly about finding.
So in terms of gameplay, it's... Lego World. Like, it's not just "inspired by", it appears to be a straight-up Lego Worlds spin-off - same engine, but with the Lego Movie 2 (and some others) setting, and more structured (in terms of worlds and objectives). ...At least, I think so, anyway - I never played Lego Worlds.

Also, Unikitty's animations are fantastic! It's pretty obvious who the animators' favourite character is. And judging by the achievement names, I'll be talking about Unikitty some amount more in the future.

Humans do not directly affect the Lego world, they're just influencing it from a higher plane of existence. When the dad was gluing stuff in the climax of the first movie, it was the micromangers that were doing it in the Lego world. Lego people have a degree of independence within their world and in the real world.

During the fight under the dryer in the second movie, it starts out as Emmet and Rex simply moving on their own in the real world. When Lucy enters the scene, it's the real world kids finding them. That's why the scene starts converting into Lego, the kids' imagination places them back into the Lego reality.

The Lego world is a grandiose version of the story that kids tell with Legos, though it can have some differences (Emmet smashes the wedding when it was the boy who did it in real life, and that was not intended to be part of the game).
However, through effort and concentration, Legos who are removed from the Lego World can also observe the real world. They can even control their own actions in it, though their powers are far more limited. Emmet used this to fall off the table in the first movie, but Rex has developed this power so much that he can freely walk, climb, and fight in the real world.

This is exactly wrong. Emmet started singing, and she only joined in after the robots all became hostile at her refusal.
