Someone really liked Pacific Rim, judging by these two scenes.

The mecha wasn't a last-minute asspull with no foreshadowing though. You had plenty of the smaller things running around and Kuvira did talk about dismantling the domes of Zaofu, it's the same mecha suit just really big.

If it had been a cannon, they could have lobbed projectiles, but as a laser they really only had the option of shooting at what they could see without obstruction.
