Everyone wants to fit in or find a clique. Most weebs grow up being socially inept due to anxiety so they stay within a closed nit group of friends who usually share the same interests as them. They often think because they like something considered obscure or out of the mainstream that makes them sophisticated in some way despite the fact they're essentially social outcasts. They see Eastern stuff as 'different', therefor it must be better. Anime has more violence and fan service, therefor it must be better. They lack the basic logic to realize just because you're 'unique' or 'not normal' doesn't necessarily mean it's good. Especially now that anime HAS become more mainstream, you notice a lot of them have become less 'moe' but more aggressive in nature, hence why they spam Western boards. They feel it's necessary to spread themselves now just like anime has spread itself, even though its always been possible to enjoy both Eastern and Western the entire time.

I used to really like anime until I realized the only reason I forced myself to watch shows I didn't really want to watch just to please my weeb friends so I could fit in.

There is a genre in Japan for this but it mostly applies to games and voice drama CDs. In general it's hard to find some kind of niche fetish stuff in Western cartoons.
