How did she become a show runner without belonging to the CalArts™ clique?
How did she become a show runner without belonging to the CalArts™ clique?
adventure time nepotism
By being equally shitty.
She's Jewish.
Being (((((jewish))
WOrking on a CalArt's alumnus show
>The creators of Megas XLR, SVA alumni, were allowed to hire their friends from SVA because one of the execs at CN thought the shows were all developing the same style and wanted to shake things up at the studio, which was full of CalArts alumni.
Pen Ward gave zero fucks and just hired anyone he felt like.
Wait she's super Jewish? How does that work?
Something something lewding Edd and Eddy.
Based pen
Sucking cock
what an ugly human
This, it's not hard to figure out
when you're one of the most well known and celebrated figures on the network then flagship show of course they'll give you something
It’s almost as if the United States is a big place and there are good artists who don’t live in California.
>how do careers work
You do good work. You make connections. They lead to new and better opportunities.
By joining the CalArts clique without actually going to CalArts.
Do you actually think that everyone who goes to CalArts comes from California?
something something The Jews etc
delet thiz
Do you actually think any of the fucks on this hellsite have the slightest inkling of how the rest of the functioning members of the human species do anything without memeing and shitposting?
I'll remember that one next time someone accuses me of nepotism.
Pen Ward met Sugar at a Zine fair in 09 or 10 and really liked her work, and invited her to take a board test for Adventure Time. She passed the board test and became a regular boarder from season 2 onwards, and her episodes were typically met with a lot of acclaim for her original songs and character direction.
It's still nepotism, user.
>GET REALISTIC, THAT'S HOW IT WORKS
No amount of this changes the fact that it's nepotism.
People like you are the reason it ever gets this bleak.
Technically Flapjack nepotism. Adventure Time is just a branch of that
I'm not sure how society is supposed to work if you can't favor people you've had personal experience working with before to work with you later
Dumbass wage cuck.
she had a good portfolio, used the small opportunities given to her well, and is generally good to work with. The connections are built on these. You can mock her show all you want but she does her job professionally.
Meritocracy taking a backseat to friendship is for the fucking birds.
But you can't tell a person's merit until you work with them, but then once you establish that tie, it's nepotism to bring them up again. Seems like you'd have to constantly feed randos into the system and reject anyone you have any assurance you can rely on.
Neoptism regardless.
>good work
Uhm, where is Sucrose good work? Coz I haven't seen it. Let's get real, it was straight up favouritism, not good work that got her as showrunner of her own cartoon. She's known for at least ONE good episode of Adventure Time and everyone began to toss praise and give her accolades for it.
She was known for lots of stuff in Adventure Time, from the Ice King and Marceline episode to the Flame Princess stuff and Fionna and Cake and nearly every song anyone remembers from that show. Not saying all of it was amazing but it's easy to see why she was singled out and given her own work.
So, if you had someone, a friend, who had potential but was lazy at his job, are you going to bring him unto your next project despite the other ones qualified?
She sucked Ward's dick.
Perhaps, doesn't change anything I said though.
Or if you have fucking tests of some kind. Jesus christ.
>good portfolio
Ed, Edd, and Eddy smut, Invader Zim fanfic, and her own original Pug Davis comic.
>used the small opportunities given to her well
At the expense of her getting a miscarriage.
>and is generally good to work with
Fired Zuke over shippingfag shit, drew a racist character and supposedly "oh, I didn't even notice that when looking over the final edits, I'm blind without my glasses guize" lied her way out of it, got wildly drunk during a livestream, and plenty more.
I don't know how she emulate herself on the Podcast but don't believe someone's public persona is the same as their personal self.
Maybe something like a degree from an institution dedicated to training and testing in the relevant subject?
Of course bunch of friendless autists would think that being able to make friends and connections is "unfair" way to progress with your career.
Social skills are also a skill.
>making friends at work
Nothing more than mutual acquiantances who have the the tendancy to keep an air of superficial friendliness to get the work done.
"direction"
That "direction" of "omg so deeep!" killed AT
heh.
He's qute. What a lovely young man.
Picked enough cherries there?
>Fired Zuke over shippingfag shit
More like Zuke being a constant asshole to everyone around herself and completely ruining the story for the expense of her own lesbian barnyard fantasy even though she was constantly warned to not to fuck with canon material. Rebecca's only fault in here was hiring some no-name Tumblr nutjob like Zuke in a serious project instead of a professional artist.
But user, she IS calarts
>falling for the Calarts meme
Only 10% of the notable animators in the industry are actually CalArts alumni. This is like saying all doctors are from Stanford Medicine or all engineers are from MIT.
gee user, it's almost as if you just gave an excellent example of why hiring people you've befriended in your chosen field to work for you is a bad idea!
Was she even friends with Zuke? Seems like she came from outside her circle
A large majority of television showrunners are not from calarts. TV animation is not the only place animation students go to for work. I have to assume most of the decent calarts folk get picked up by big studios if they wished to work there. Why does Yea Forums care so much about someone with such a minimal social media presence?
Zuke wasn't friends with Sugar. Rebecca only saw Zuke's work in Tumblr and decided to give her a chance.
jew
1. Be born Jewish
2. Be born in America
Being recognised for your good work isn't nepotism.
I think it's a better question of how did both her and IJQ come from a state (Maryland) with no deep connections to the animation industry, and end up leading their own shows. A lot of people in the industry, especially people higher up the food chain, grew up in California or NY and started connections pretty young. Maryland has a few art institutions but it's not really known for sending art talent in droves or having deep connections to the animation industry.
Are her kids born circumcised?
They are actually talented and Penn spotted them. The episodes they did in Adventure were immediately applauded.
They the first generation of creator to have got at the same time an equal rise of popularity on internet and in the industry itself. It's kind of a new frontier.
That's not how it works, user.
>without belonging to the CalArts™ clique?
she spent several years literally sucking a calartfart cock she's more of their clique than you'll ever be.
>and Fionna and Cake
Fionna and Cake was Natasha Allegri (the Bee and Puppycat girl).
> another calarts boogeyman thread
I wonder when this fad will die out
That seems to be the popular opinion on Yea Forums, even though it's objectively and demonstrably wrong.
If anything, most of the Calarts alumni came from the south and midwest, with native Californians being in the minority.
Most of the time when people "hire their friends from tumblr", they don't even know the people they're hiring. Pen, for example, hired Sugar because he liked Pug Davis. He barely knew her prior to that.
It's been a thing since at least the late 90s. It's not going away any time soon
