Yeah, from initial impressions it’s easy to see how someone could think it’s simply a more sophisticated British type of young audience show meant for 4-to-7s or whereabouts but if you’re showing it to tiny kids with that belief then you’re bound to be horrified by the soul-stealing monsters and David basically saying fuck (plus there’s all the nuanced friendship tension and coming-of-age stuff that’ll fly over their heads). It’s very literary though, the content is about on-par with what’s in a lot of fantasy novels for kids, it’s just rare to see that represented on screen and without a hint of winking irony to deflate everything.
There’s a lot of reviews on Common Sense Media that praise the show but complain the Marra episode gave their kids nightmares, I bet a lot of those kids still love it regardless of their parents’ objection though

Trollsberg and Gravity Falls are different settings in their entirety. Trollsberg for instance, is in a world where monsters are very much a fact of life with everyone more or less completely used to their presence. Trolls and Giants are seen more as natural hazards, obstacles to overcome, with Woodman being something akin to a local trickster figure. Out of a few exceptions like the Marra and Trevor's Ayys, mankind has learned to live with the supernatural and as a result, the setting is colorful and very much a tribute to man's relationship with nature.

GF is a town where nobody knows anything save for a jaded con-man rooking people in a tourist trap. It's a play on Twin Peaks and Silent Hill where the supernatural is this dreary mysterious thing you know absolutely nothing about-yes, yes. GF is colorful and largely childish but it's a kid's show so of course you're going to have evil lawn gnomes grooming pre-teen girls and minotaurs who live in the middle of the forest with nobody really giving a toss. But I would like to point out that the later seasons did away with the pseudo-Kubrick/Ito feel and instead embraced this tumblrite open canvas plot based on memes and the head's repressed feelings for his sister.

Hilda is the better show, hand's down. It knows what it wants to be.

Hilda herself is a very likable character. She's proactive and generally well meaning and only wants to help and get a long but at the same time she's very rash and doesn't always consider the consequences of her actions and that others, especially the more troublesome mystic folk don't share her sentiments. She's clever and knows bout magic but not enough to the point were she can solve problems without help and research and things don't always go the way she wants.

Mix of both. Some episodes are taken from the graphic novels (although somethings are different ex: David and Frida are much more minor characters in the books), some are original to the show.

The show has made episodes based on just about every Hilda book out so far, so season 2 will have much more original stories. Luckily the creator of Hilda works on the show too, so the original eps are faithful to the creator's vision.

Gravity Falls has some nice backgrounds too, imo.

Hilda is more focused on the backgrounds, while GF is focused on the characters, both are pretty landscaping shows, but in the case of Hilda, it has slow passes, comfy music and moments when you just sit and enjoy the view, the fact that Pearson is not an animator but an ilustrator helps. GF on the other hand is more focused on the jokes and misteries so the backgrounds are in a secondary place.
