The way it works would be they (and you) can use the likeness of Felix up to a certain year (and iirc next year is when his more notable design is up) but they can't use the name Felix (trademark) or some aspects that appeared later like the magic bag

If Oswald does finally make it into KH, I really hope they try to differnate him as possible from Epic Mickey, though there is the issue of him not having a "modern" design like his brother. Maybe they could go the "Mickey's nobody" or "Mickey and Oswald are Yen Sid's foster children" route?

The documentary about Floyd Norman had an interesting bit where he talked about drawing the daily Mickey strip for 6 years and how because Mickey represents Disney every single thing he does is scrutinized extensively by the legal department and that he would constantly offend them even though he tried not to.

Oswald and Ortensia definitely seem more passionate about each other. Like...Mickey will Kiss Minnie once when he's feeling victorious, or Minnie will kiss Mickey a bunch as a reward or to convince him to do something like in "the little tailor"

I think they'd get along now that the rivalry is over. Felix maintained himself over the years with popular adaptions but has similar personality, while Oswald would relate to Koko more as he fell into obscurity from a greater high even more then Oswald did and have resentment towards the replacement

In some ways the reason Oswald is notable unlike others is instead of his animator going to a studio no one remembers he was the sacrifice to lead to the world's biggest entertainment company. And in some ways that's why he's been wanted for a media franchise and revival of his own when almost everyone else from the era is forgotten

Also, Disney left an exploitative job to start his own company that eventually exploited everyone and made it's employees want to leave and start their own companies.

I'm going through the old Disney Oswald cartoons as many more have become available since the last time I went through them, and I have to wonder, would it be more desirable to reuse stuff from them in new Oswald content or to just have a continuous string of new characters for him to content with if/when he finally gets new shorts?

Take the mechanical cow for instance: Oswald had a robot cow once and fought kidnappers/gangsters when they nabbed Fanny for some reason. I don't think that robot cow was ever seen again. Not even in Epic Mickey which seems like a wasted opportunity.

I’m pretty sure Disney had the same problem too. Oswald was an adult in Poor Papa, and then he was an elementary kid in Oh Teacher. Later cartoons though, portrayed him more like a young adult as he’s shown proposing to Ortensia in Oils Well, working a job in Sky Scrappers and so on.
Back then, cartoon characters were meant to be blank slates so that you could put them in whatever situation and tell the story from there.

The rabbit girl was never officially named under Disney. (and Ortensia's name was probably Sadie). So, not same. And as you implied, there's no canon anyway.

But the rabbit girl under Disney s generally a danger slut: faking drowning to lure the lifeguard, etc. The kind of character your put in a 21st century reboot, actually.

Yeah, his age was never consistent.

The original Oswald cartoon, Poor Papa, wasn't received well by Walt's boss at Universal so he made him younger in the following toons, but it varied wildly how young he was.
It's easier to just believe he was an actor doing gigs if it's something that bothers you.

Fanny went for the cat who stole Oswald's bike and her along with it, nearly got her drowned, and ignored the fact that all of it was the school bully cat's fault.
She only went back to Oswald when she thought he beat up the cat, so "danger slut" is only slightly inaccurate.

I'm still going through all the old Disney Oswald cartoons, so I don't know if Ortensia is the same way.

This was a hell of a time.
