I can't draw. I use the free program paint ddot net.
For that beary I used a template from a beary making thread. I searched for a viking hat I wanted and put it on a layer Same with the sword. The leather dress/clothes are another layer or two just drawn with lines same as you would would do in paint. There are other free programs out there that do layers... and lots of tutorials on youtube. If I can do it you can, too. I want to see your bearies.

Also, I mostly use Paint.NET for editing. The plugins are too but one thing it doesn't do is gif animation. I've been struggling to use GIMP But the UI is such a pain in the b*tt to use. It seems like it has a lot of advanced features but it requires so much effort to do something P.N could do in two clicks.

yeah, I build layers in paint.NET, save them as individual images then "open as layers" in gimp. Export as .gif for animated gif. I can't figure out gimp enough otherwise. it is confusing.
