Whatever happened to indie music?
Whatever happened to indie music?
Rich white ppl stopped listening to whtie men and started listening to rap and white women
It's not "indie" if it's on every social media outlet and everyone is paying attention to the "scene." The internet happened.
It became an extension of mainstream pop. The livelihood of the platform relies entirely on the reception of the music, so they promote indie artists the same way they would rappers and pop stars,.
Pitchfork? Buddy it's not 2009.
Why has everything become so aggressively corporate?
Indie isn't trendy anymore. It became too associated with the 2000s Brooklyn Portland Austin "hipster" stereotype and fashion aesthetic, and once that fell out of favor so did indie.
Indie also ironically became a mainstream co opted pop genre, and like other pop music it lived and died by the image.
It's now confined to bandcamp.
artists stopped making music just to express themselves or just for the fun and love of it
the plebs
Everyone found out it was being made by rich kids. All appeal was lost.
true, the illusion of being some diy kid making it from a demo in his bedroom was shattered and that didn't help. so many of these p4k buzz bands had connections or were uber rich with paid for nyc apartments and private school education.
it sounds shitty but I'm gonna be honest
it's better than what we have now
Now that the 2010s are almost over. I think it's time for us to admit that the late/00s to early 10s was a pretty dope time for music.
I'm talking about Carles and Hipster Runoff
I'm talking about Chillwave and Altered Zones
I'm talking about before vaporwave became mainstream
I'm talking about MTV's WEIRD VIBES
I'm talking about when Brooklyn was still a viable place for music
I'm talking about when Pitchfork scores still mattered
I'm talking about when the Blogosphere was a thing
I'm talking about when people considered AnCo the crown princes of indie
I'm talking about Fantano before he gave The Money Store a 10/10
I'm talking about that weird brief period of surf rock revival
I'm talking about when Death Grips & Swans still *scared* people
I'm talking about when it felt good to be a hipster
*raises IPA*
BROTHERS, A TOAST!
hell yeah dude, those were the days
lol Jay. I know the Tidal check isn't that great but he's a billionaire and now he's shilling T-shirts? This nigga must have been born 85% jew.
by 2015 indie was dead
>Whatever happened to indie music
Well they stopped making mumblecore. And all the supposedly sad indie musicians all ended up having kids and starting families and shit. It's like an entire genre of music became J. Cole overnight. Only Misty Man could pull off marriage and relationships and not sound stupid and gay
He's talking early 10s late oughts
It was a wonderful time
It died instantly when Pumped Up Kicks came out
you can still find good albums in their top 50 but they're still putting ariana grande on it
The girls were the best part (and the twink boys)
