As much as I've railed against Metalcore in the past, I'm starting to discover gems from the early '90s when bands were more influenced by Groove and Thrash Metal as opposed to Post-Hardcore and Melodeath. Metalcore acts seemed to collectively lose the plot by the time the 2000s rolled around and all of them wanted to be At the Gates. Thankfully, a new wave of Metalcore acts are rediscovering their roots in Hardcore, so hopefully, they'll produce music more in line with New York and less in line with Gothenburg.

All Gorgoroth is medicore anyway. Out of the early Norway scene, they were the biggest also-ran type. They brought nothing off their own to table, bar edgy antics. Nothing worthwhile to the development of the genre. Just gimmicky shit for posers to latch on to.

Am I the only person on this fucking website that likes melodeath? I kind of get why it's hated, but honestly a decent number of people I've met that like metal say it was their first intro to the genre. I got into extreme metal from watching Metalocalypse when I was younger, and sure I branched out and listen to other subgenres, but I still really enjoy gothenburg melodeath type shit like early In Flames, At the Gates, and Dark Tranquillity. For any of you that started out with melodeath, which I'd wager is a fair few of you, what made you start to dislike the genre?

Its as you, yourself described, an entry level genre. As you get more acquainted with metal, you'll start to find the elements of melodeath you like are done better elsewhere. And you'll increasingly lose interest in the genre and only listen to old gothenburg bands now and then out of nostalgia. Either that or you'll chug soi and listen to some le ebic leddit tier pretentious Insomnium type shit.

Eh I used to not like Pentagram all that much either, it seemed just by-numbers and nothing stood out. Then one day it just clicked. It may happen to you too.
What I will probably NEVER like is any Satyricon, except a few of the tracks on ND. Way too many glaring flaws for me to really sink in.

I assume you've already listened to it but Dark Medieval Times is actually pretty killer, that's what got me into Satyricon.

That's a common thing I see people say online, that everything melodeath does is done better elsewhere, but no other genre I've listened to really impacted me as much as melodeath did, except maybe black metal (which I also discovered through melodeath, back on that shitty last.fm app on xbox 360). Like I said, I do listen to a lot of other shit, I've been listening to extreme metal subgenres for going on 13 or so years now, but recently I've just been on a kick of listening to nothing but Amon Amarth pandora stations and stuff like that. Maybe it is just nostalgia, but I don't think that I'll ever really lose interest in the genre.

I've only listened to the new Swallow the Sun, Children of Bodom, and Amon Amarth albums. I disliked the first two, Berserker had a few ok songs on it. I'm going to see Amon Amarth live some time in October, and the only newer song I'm really interested in seeing live is Shield Wall

I don't really actively search for new melodeath bands because I do admit the genre has a bunch of filler shit in it, but I still think there are a lot of older melodeath albums that hold up really well. I agree the genre doesn't have anything new to offer, but a lot of the classic albums are really great and it sucks to see how many people hate them on here

Its a little bit of a meme/overreaction, because of the direction the genre has gone and the trite its inspired. But it does have a point. If nothing new and worthwhile is really coming out the genre, why the need for discussion? So we can all jerk each other off about the same albums most of us already are aware of?
