Black metal is often a misunderstood genre where the artist tries to convey a certain atmosphere or feeling that they were feeling, so often the lyrics do come out as edgy but if you get behind the melodies and are in the right state of mind it’s a beautiful genre.

This is my genuinely honest opinion. I really think that Black Metal is one of a number of metal subgenres that primarily exist for the sake of preference falsification (saying you like something to look cool, like scotch).

The only thing I've observed that separates black metal from modern death metal is all the satanic stuff and the Norwegian origin.

Whenever someone cites "true" black metal, it is always a venom song recorded on a cassette in the 80s that would sound like shit even if it wasn't produced by putting a cat orgy on a midi controller.

Don't force it. Just memorize some album/song names and tell people you like black metal and you are about as ahead as anyone else on the subject.

Or if you really wanna piss people off, say you like "Act of Depression" by Underoath. Its bound to trigger "true" black metal fans.

If yo want something edgier to listen to because you're in a bad mood, just surf around your suggestions or ask for recs.

Apex Predator is pretty good by Napalm Death, despite the fact that I would typically cite grindcore as another one of those metal genres that exists for the name dropping.
