XY were questionable instalments but BW2 were so good that I had faith they'd turn it around. ORAS was when I became concerned and SuMu was when I gave up all hope for the franchise and moved on.

Yo-kai Watch never had a transfer function of creatures from your older games to your newer ones.
This proves you didn't do your research, since Pokemon from RS and own could be transferred to newer games and they always had space for all the pokemon. That is the key thing people are angry about, since now some pokemon are outright unable to be transferred, forcing you to either keep them in Pokemon Home or the older games.

If the Pokemon were retconned in a cool way, say by time-travelling to the distant past when some breeds didn't exist (like Trubbish or Magnemite), or a cataclysmic event caused climate change in which certain Pokemon couldn't survive, then the Pokemon removal would make sense, and the game would benefit from a more interesting, more engaging story

I liked XY for what it was but I never thought it was anything special. ORAS made me far more upset than a simple remake ever should and SM was so goddamn boring I didn't even get a third of the way in. I try to keep tabs on the series to see if it's fixing its issues but every time I see a new game it just feels like everything's getting worse.
I don't think it's solely a laziness issue. Incompetence plays a major role too. the 3DS games ran like dogshit and apparently that was because the XY models were future-proofed for future systems (aka the switch) and now they can't be bothered to put them to use.

I feel it'd had to be a mix of this, and shaking up the core gameplay. Keeping the same gameplay and story garbage but reducing half of their workload doesn't make sense, especially when we've seen literally 0 increase in terms of "quality" and how snapping half of the dex could affect "balance".
