the goal and endgame of these huge game companies is to get customers to pay a subscription in order to stream games. everything will be under their control; a complete walled garden

they want less physical game copies and less of even digitally downloaded games.

if you put it that way, then it likely means that you buy digital now if you still play games. it's a very nice way to save space compared to physical games -- but they want that gone. digital games also GONE; to be replaced by streaming games. you need to be online for these streaming services

It means that if streaming ever takes off and Sony continue using Microsoft for their streaming infrastructure, Microsoft will make money off Sony's success whilst providing their own streaming service to rival Sony's. Pretty clever strategy if I'm honest. At the end of the day all these companies like MS and Google are in the business of making maximum profits so they will go with whatever options will let them achieve that.
