Yes, the English names and their bad puns that have nothing to do with the original 99 percent of the time.

>trusting the word of a w*Man

With all murder cases and being a cult leader people may think shes a crazy.
But really is just Japan being Japan

She and Pheonix are asexual and/or have the relationship skills of a 10 year old. Eventually Pearl is gonna get sick of it and lock them in a room together. Or claim Pheonix for herself.

Or Mia's ghost possesses her and they both rape Pheonix while he's drunk and sorrowful about being disbarred.

I would say the same thing if the game's original language was German. You don't translate names, that's a pretty commonly accepted convention of translating. You especially don't make up new puns out of the names that had nothing to do with the original. The only reason people like you defend such a shitty translation is it's what you played first.

Jao culture catch 22. If she has sex but doesn't get married she's a whore. If she's married but doesn't have children she's damaged goods. If she has children but still has a job she's a bad mother. You get why their birthrate is so low now?

naw, fuck you, he's gumshoe

She's childish and sheltered, she likely wasn't in the company of any men while in Khurain and even if she was, she's as dense as Nick is (and fairly unintelligent to boot), so the few that were probably found her too much of a bother.
That and Pearl likely actively drove men away because she's a shipping fangirl.

Only real answer

You pretty much just proved my point. You basically are saying "I know him as Gumshoe so that's why I prefer that name" So in other words exactly what I wrote in my last post, >The only reason people like you defend such a shitty translation is it's what you played first.
You can't defend it on any other grounds.

Flat. FLAT.

And that's a good thing!

If they are going to translate them go ahead and translate the pun. Problem is they very rarely do, they normally make up a new pun that has nothing to do with the original.

Or it shows there are fans who would have always appreciated a more loyal translation.

HEY EVERYONE LOOK AT THIS WEEB GETTING MAD

HES SOOOOOOOOOOO MAD

>EAT

Now I remember those fan sprites of a wider Maya in court records

Please type out the literal translation of Ryuichi Naruhodo. Go on.

I mean one part of his name is just a reference to a real person. I refer you back to you don't translate names. You didn't even pick someone whose full name is a pun. You fags act like Ace Attorney is the only game where the names have meaning or puns in them, it's not. Yet it is one of the only translations (from any language, not just Jap) that sees it necessary to change names just to make puns that have nothing to do with original. As for Phoenix's last name, they did do a decent job at translating it. Wright is in the same vein as "I understand" which doesn't have a great exact one word translation in English. I don't think they universally did a terrible job but some names are SO bad. I would still prefer the original names but Wright is much better than naming a guy Sal Manella when the original pun has nothing to do with food borne illness.
Would be saying it no matter what language it is. You sperging out like this over my opinion on a translation is just embarrassing. And usually the guy whose typing in all caps and insulting people is the mad one but that's just my experience. Keep going though, it's funny how I counter one of your points and then you just fall back on insults.

Burg (I haven't had proper Ramen since there are no places around here that have it and i suck at cooking)

Attached: burg.webm (1280x720, 2.79M)

SPH with Maya!

Ryu means dragon
Ichi means one, and in extreme cases can mean bird

Naruhodo is just "I understand

Phoenix - Burning Dragon bird
Wright - reference to wright brothers, also sounds like "right", which is a way of understanding

Put together he's a phoenix that burns from the ashes of prosecutors shitting on his case because he's always right

IE, you're a dumb fuck AND A MAD WEEEEEEEEEEEEB

>AND A MAD WEEEEEEEEEEEEB
If I was a weeb I would have been able to understand the Kanji in his name. Anyway you are only proving my point that it's possible to translate the names more faithfully to the originally intention than they often do. How about you go through all the names in the first game and defend them this well? Because you can't. Besides that though I see you won't address the other point I made, literally every language has "meaning" in names, you don't translate that meaning though in 99 percent of cases. Phoenix Wright does though. I mean you can argue with me all you want dude but the VAST majority of translations do not do what you are suggesting they should (again from any language not just Jap) and I'm pretty sure that's a more valid opinion than some scrub on the internet.

Guys! I just bought a new ladder, and it's arriving today! What do you think of it?

Attached: ladder.jpg (1000x1000, 54K)

The games were translated in a time where these changes were more acceptable, and the English names and location changed helped it reach a wider audience internationally. While not all the localized names are perfect, the main character's names are fan fucking tastic.

Came here to post this

>How about you go through all the names in the first game and defend them this well? Because you can't.

Yes now defend it and explain how Sal Manella is the same thing as "Annoying Otaku". Because the wiki doesn't do that despite what you may say.

What the hell is salmonella?

My case has been rested, throw him in Yea Forums and throw away the key

Haha that's such a ridiculous stretch it speaks for itself. With that logic why not name him Mr. Dog poop. After all dog poop is gross and smelly and filled with parasites. Holy shit dude I'm actually laughing at what a stretch that is.

and you totally could, Doug Poupell is his localized name and tells us far more than Uzai Takuya

or would you rather his name be "Dumb Nerd" or "Stupid DnD Player" or "That fag who actually pays for WoW"

What would you name him? Are you that same retard who came up with Annoy Ingnerd or some shit the other day? I bet you are.

His original name. I've already made it clear that I think translating names is a stupid practice as does 99 percent of the industry. Find a foreign film with subtitles, they don't try to translate the meaning of a character's name. If a German character is a fisherman with the last name Fishcer you would not see it subtitled as "Fisherman" to retain the pun. Again you localization loyalists can talk it up all you want but no other translations do what AA does, in any field, yet you guys act like the entire game would be ruined if you don't understand stupid puns behind the original names. Then I guess every foreign film ever is ruined too because like I said, no film company would ever translate names in the subtitles.

>but no other translations do what AA does
That's simply not true, For example, in Polish version of Hearthstone Uther Lightbringer is translated as Uther Światłodzierżca.

Well I do agree Hearthstone's Polish version is the model for all translators to follow

I am not familiar with french, german or spanish translations so I can't comment on that but here's another one: Planescape Torment: Fall-From-Grace - Nie-Sława

>I am not familiar with french, german or spanish translations
I mean same with me dude. I don't know the languages you're bring up so I can't comment on whether or not it sounds silly. I can say that in most English translations it is not the norm.

Eat your hamburgers, Apollo

Attached: yayoi eats a HUGE burg.jpg (500x468, 255K)

You're not supposed to go from one language to the other, that's all.
The english version is fucking amazing and pretty much its own parallel version of the original, it's what makes the game so great because it doesn't feel out of place. Direct translations of japanese puns usually fall completely flat

Fuck, I just got it.

>it's what makes the game so great because it doesn't feel out of place.
It absolutely felt out of place when I played the original and a girl in what is clearly an Asian outfit is suggesting we go get hamburgers. It's also just stupid because Americans know what ramen is, I was eating cup noodle when i was little I had no clue it wasn't american. That's why that classic awkward zombie comic exists, because if you aren't brain dead it is absolutely obvious in certain places that you are playing a localization where shit was changed which for some people can take them out of it.
>Direct translations of japanese puns usually fall completely flat
Which is why I said they shouldn't be translated. Every language has puns and they never translate well, not every translation renames every character just so their name will be some kind of pun no matter how far from the original it is. That's extremely uncommon because it has the potential to change the work and how parts of it come off.

Translating a pun is impossible most of the time. If you do it literally you just end up with nonsense.
Personally I sort of agree, I'd prefer them to just keep the original names untranslated at all, but wordplay is the one thing there is a legitimate reason to change. It doesn't survive a transition between languages at all, so if you want there to be a recognisable pun or joke there for the viewer you have to invent a new one.

Judging from this thread, is this a bad case of "localization=censorship" retards? Some things will get lost in translation but it's just to appeal to western audiences or make more sense. If you dont like based Japanifornia, get the fuck out. It's the same reason Persona is so fucking weird during the school segments expecting you to know a huge chunk of Japanese history as basic knowledge.

How the fuck do you not know how to prepare and cook daigaku-imo?

Must have missed that one in home economics.

What do you take me for? a tsukkomi?

>you have to invent a new one.
My issue is for many character names the pun they came up with is bad and/or nothing like the original. If that's the case just stop trying so hard. I understand that they probably wanted consistency with names all being translated or none being translated but I think that's a bad approach if you have to come up with stupid names that are so bad I can tell they were nothing like the original. It's never failed that the names I find the stupidest are furthest from their original intention.

That anime really showcased her cute feet.

It depends, are we talking nice, tasty burgers or murican burgers?

AMERICA STRONG

IN-AND-OUT
WHOPPERS
BIG MACS
DEEP FRIED IN LARD TOPPED WITH HEARTY THICK CUT BACON SMOTHERED IN MAYONAISE

GOD BLESS THE U S AND THE A

I guess, but the issue is that stupid punny names are arguably part of the charm of the games. If you don't translate at all then people just miss out on that aspect altogether, if you do translate them then you end up having to invent new stuff that may not fit at all or may have unintended implications. Kind of a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation. I'd have kept the names in the original language, and let people look them up if they wanted to get the puns and such, but that's not ideal either. I can see why they went the other route.
Unlike the really stupid and pointless shit, like trying to pretend it's set in America, it's at least excusable and doesn't directly mess up the story.

Attached: IMG_20190423_000013.jpg (2145x941, 353K)

Actually, I'm still waiting for Iris to reappear in the series. You simplly can't remove someone who was so important to Phoenix and had a whole backstory and case involving them both. And I swear to god if she comes back just to be a victim I'll personally fly to Japan to punch Shu Takumi on the face.

But it's thanks to the localization retards that we didn't get the prequel. Why can't americans understand that there's another country besides usa?

I pretty much agree with everything you said. I'm glad to see someone else in this thread is capable of understanding my point of view on the situation without just going "lol retarded weebs"

I thought mutts didn’t like mayonnaise

God I want to fuck Pearl.

You mean Great Ace Attorney? Because as far as I know that was more an issue with copyright in the west than localization issues.

Just change the fucking names, they did the same with JJBA. they changed whole countries but they can't do that?

Do the Japanese names also have nothing to do with the meaning of the Japanese names? Because that was my criticism of the translation in the post you quoted yet you conveniently ignored that aspect of my post. I don't care that they are bad puns, I care that they are bad translations of bad puns and sometimes don't even relate to original pun.

The cases, evidence, etc are very clear references to homles stories. Even if you change the name you'd have to change a good portion of the plot. For instance, one of the pieces of evidence is a draft of a "the hound of the baskervilles" which very clearly has an effect on holmes. It would be very hard to remove the holmes element to the point where it wouldn't be worth it on a niche-ish game. Especially considering the rest of the stuff in there.

Attached: 1543791286709.png (800x1129, 443K)

More like if many people need to cut off half my sentence they are quoting and then resort to ad hominem when I point it out it probably means I'm right. Insult me all you want but try actually arguing the points I make when you do so, if you don't and JUST insult me it's clear you don't have an argument which you are continuing to prove. If you do then try making it instead of just using greentext to misrepresent what I say.

butthurt

yes Dragon Isee is such a fantastic name

Hello, everyone! My name is Dragon Isee, and with my assistant Evening Village (who loves burgers and who I met after her sister, Thousandfathoms Village, was killed), I investigate crimes and defend clients as a defense attorney! My rival is the prosecutor Clever Swordedge, who I was in primary school with (together with my first client, Youknow Forsure). He was mentored by Fromhell Demon, a famous prosecutor (who is now gone, but his legacy continues with his daughter, Dark Demon).

These days I've taken proteges myself, like Surprise Lawboy and Moon Heartnoise, and adopted a daughter, Seethrough. Life is swell here in Japanifornia.

No one ever expects Surprise Lawboy.

I bet those sandals stink

Pearl literally did not grow, she's 18 already.

>Moon Heartnoise

So Trucy's name would be Seethrough Isee?

correct

You guys are just proving my point that the only people responding to me are willfully misinterpreting what I say.

absolutely nothing has been changed, it's the most literal translation possible. Keeping it in Japanese changes nothing, I don't even know what your point is anymore.

maybe ur just dum

without localization all of the puns would be lost in translation as generic japanese names

people love AA because of the great localization and funny dialogue, taking away the puns and the wordplay would leave it a boring, stilted japanese lawyer simulation

even the fan translation of DGS tries to localize puns, even if the names are left intact

>footfags for a series where you only ever see characters from the waist upwards
That's impressive.

How would she have reacted to what happened to Nick during the timeskip? She got humbled pretty hard in AA3 + I1/I2 but the whole facing Nick again in court thing was still important to her IIRC.

Except you're just fucking objectively wrong, we're responding to you because you're an idiot. Either:
>the pun is hard to translate so something new is made up
>the pun is kept intact
>there's no pun and the general feeling of the name is kept (like with Edgeworth)

All of these three happen. You never offered any real alternatives, the localization is fine.

>absolutely nothing has been changed, it's the most literal translation possible
Which I said in most is not what should be done.
>I don't even know what your point is anymore.
That you don't translate names, I've said it like 20 times. Despite that you make a post where you directly translate every name. I can't believe you are actually that stupid. >even the fan translation of DGS tries to localize puns, even if the names are left intact
And that's exactly what I am in favor of doing. You guys could try reading the posts I've made.

>foolish fool who foolishly lost his badge presenting foolishly forged evidence!! i will get my revenge some day

>That you don't translate names

The point is that keeping it in japanese doesn't make it any less stupid, the names are LITERALLY puns, they aren't actual names.

If the character's name was kazuya suzuki and you changed it to john brown then people would agree with you, but when the character's name is literally Clever Swordedge you don't have much footing

so no, you're just dumb

She probably paid him a visit, tried to yell at him, accidentally gets wrecked in an argument and then leaves while blubbering about muh fools.

>You never offered any real alternatives
I have said multiple times the names should be kept the same. Lots of works of fiction have names that have meaning, you almost never translate them. On top of that it's completely unnecessary to change shit like ramen to hamburgers, americans know what ramen is. Cup noodle and maruchan have been popular for decades.

>That you don't translate names
just play the japanese game then

YOU SMALL BRAINED FOOLS
BEHOLD

Attached: Ramen-Burger-Recipe-Video.jpg (550x309, 33K)

And this is how the conversation keeps ending. I point out you never translate names in any other work of fiction, language or medium and someone just ignores that point and says something unrelated or insults me.

The point is not to translate literally, but to convey a similar sense, which is often what localization is. Yes, ramen exists in America, but it's not the regular thing to go for. Not translating the names is fucking retarded because that just means it's gobbledigook to most people and to those who can understand it... they could've played the Japanese version.

Imagine having Maya ride you cowgirl style, while Mia's ghost is giving a ghost bj to you at the same time.

>Yes, ramen exists in America, but it's not the regular thing to go for.
And shinto shrines aren't regular either. AA localization apparently takes place in "Japanafornia" where Japanese culture flourished but I guess that doesn't include names or food.

except names are constantly translated? what the fuck are you on about

Are those people's names? Pretty sure they aren't. Also are you saying it's a good thing that they didn't even release the real Mario 2 over in America at first because I don't view that as a good thing.
Nintendo in the 90s is hardly the standard for localization. They themselves recognized some of the stupid decisions they made considering they changed Peach's name to Peach instead of leaving it as Toadstool. Also not sure what your point with Bowser is because they do still call Koopas, Koopas. If anything it shows Nintendo is extremely inconsistent in how they localize things. See above with them eventually realizing they should probably release the real Mario Bros. 2 in America.

>tfw people call jigglypuff purin

what the FUCK

They are all deviations from japanese which is unacceptable, changing untranslatable scripts is UNACCEPTABLE

how many more games are there and are they worth buying? last one i played is when phoenix came back as a defense attorney

>Tfw checkers is called rally and Carl's jr's is called hardees

What the fuck dude, I can't handle this, this is unacceptable

>Also not sure what your point with Bowser is because they do still call Koopas, Koopas
Koopas are Nokonoko in Japan, dumbfuck. It's still an extremely common thing to do even outside of the 90s and not just Nintendo, like with Pokemon, Animal Crossing, Megaman, etc. As long as names don't translate well to English when taken literally, they get changed. It's normal.

>Koopas are Nokonoko in Japan,
And why are they called Koopas in English?

They call this game series actually called "Turnabout Court" "Ace Attorney", what the fUCK is wrong with these people

And as has been the trend in this thread, someone starts insulting me and putting words in my mouth. It sure makes you fags angry to hear someone doesn't like a localization you like.

feetfags or _______ as I like to call them

Attached: UH.png (276x361, 170K)

Because it's technically "Bowser Koopa", but in English "Koopa" always refers to Koopa Troopas. Good luck saying "Bowser" to Japanese people, too.

>he thinks a thread of people calling him out on his shit means they're "angry"
classic coping

Based individuals

>I'm right, it's everyone else who's been wrong

uh

k

And what is Koopa a reference to?

I have never gotten this many replies to shit I have said on Yea Forums. It's pretty clear this makes some AA fans heated. I'm willing to bet all the people insulting me don't stop to insult every post they think is retarded.

Maya's feet or Pearl's feet?

>Diego and Mia

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA WHY COULDN'T WE SAVE THEM

Attached: feels.png (2400x2400, 225K)

It's funny that you take a post where I said people keep putting words in my mouth and then put words in my mouth.

To Bowser Koopa, like I said? What are you on about? Are you trying to sidetrack to some weird Koopa discussion here to ignore every single other game series that also localized their names?

>TWO SCOOPS?
>TWO?
>FUCK DRUMPF

what the fuck does that have to do with anything?

I'm trying to get you to admit that the localization uses a reference to kappas which according to you, you shouldn't do because foreigners don't know what a kappa is. It's clear that you are just going to play dumb though.

Well I must admit, you got me there.

BASED

but it literally doesn't?

But... foreigners do not get what a kappa is. Like "Goomba" it just ends up being a fantasy name in this case. Why do you think they made the major character have a different name and the generic enemy doesn't?

Even assuming they thought foreigners were mighty clever and would get kappa but not the other names, that still leaves a zillion other names they did localize without any reference to anything Japanese whatsoever. But go on, keep drilling this single name.

Pretty sure it is but even if isn't, it's the Japanese name of Bowser, it has a meaning foreigners won't understand therefore according you they shouldn't use it.

This is how all of these sorts of conversations go. People get defensive over things they like, when those things are criticized in any way it feels like an attack on them so they attack back.
I wouldn't bother responding or arguing with those replies, they're not actually attempting to have a discussion, so it's not possible to get anything useful out of them.

refined gentlemen

extreme samefagging doesn't really help you

you just know

No user someone else was just able to recognize how defensive AA fans in this thread are getting. It's not a good look when a thread is filled with single word posts like "cope".

1 in 4 Japanese adults are still virgins by the time they hit 30

So are 1 in 10 Americans

whatever gets you to ignore people because they say mean words, user

As I have said many times, you are confronted with something you can't argue with and your response is an insult. What's wrong user, too hard to admit you were wrong about me samefagging?

jesus christ shut the fuck up you drooling retards

i mean, people have constantly engaged with you on your actual topic but you keep babying out and going meta, complaining about insults like it's your first day here

people pointed out that
>localizing names is actually common practice
>localizing names makes the general tone be accepted better across borders, as is the case in AA
>the AA japanese games aren't that great to start with
>the names don't carry any weight because they're well known abroad

you've constantly not engaged with any of this, like you're now just ignoring that guy's post about mario names, and then you complain people don't engage with you. you're just stirring shit for the sake of it.
it also was definitely a samefag

No, it's actually a name

If I named a character say, Ragna the BloodEdge, you can't exactly change that to anything

but if I have a character that is say, DumbFuck PoopyPants and the core of his character is that he's a dumb fuck who poops his pants, that probably warrants translating for other languages

*names, not games

>i mean, people have constantly engaged with you on your actual topic but you keep babying out and going meta, complaining about insults like it's your first day here
Incorrect I complain about insults when someone ignores the entire body of my post to just post something like "lol weeb" or "cope". These are not arguments and I cannot say anything to them. The very post you are responding to was me proving I wasn't samefagging and the response doesn't even acknowledge this. Don't pretend you want to have a conversation if you are going to make posts that are NOTHING BUT insults. I've already said, insult me all you want just actually make a point when you do it.

>No, it's actually a name
And a Japanese dish which foreigners won't understand so it shouldn't be used, according to you

It's been a while since I've read this kind of autism. Awesome.

Attached: 1447992210658.gif (320x352, 3.43M)

i remade all the points made for you in that post all convenient, and here you go just going meta again
if you actually wanted a discussion there was an opportunity, but alas, you're hellbent on redoing the whole fucking thread for some reason

Actually it's a korean dish, which is actually a contraction of what it's actually called, which ties into the theme of translating things that foreigners (IE YOU), would not understand so we don't get into this fucking debate in the first debate

>when someone ignores the entire body of my post to just post something like "lol weeb" or "cope". These are not arguments and I cannot say anything to them
Yes? That's what insults are? Just don't engage with those posts and don't be such a faggot about them.

why is she so cute

Shut up, slut.

>People who barely know Japanese complaining that Ace Attorney have bad localizations

This always happens. Go bitch about Dragon Quest, that's a series of games with actual bad localizations.

"Bowser, King of the Koopas" is how Bowser is addressed in the SMB1 manual. Ergo, the turtle enemies (which also look like him) are called Koopas.

I just beat the first game and am gonna play 2 and 3. What games should I play/avoid in the series?

There's none you should outright avoid, but PLvsAA and DGS could be considered optional

>What games should I play
the rest
>avoid
none

not the only thing that smells like fish there

I would like to hear more details

I beef burgered your sister last night

>We're 20 games in

20? Let's see, ignoring re-releases, we have: AA 1-6, AAI 1 and 2, DGS 1 and 2 and Professor Layton Vs. Ace Attorney. That makes eleven Ace Attorney games total, since games like Marvel Vs. Capcom and Project X Zone don't count.
