Its a 30 hour JRPG that has around 2 hours of story. And getting the A ending pretty much requires a guide.

The complete opposite is true. The story is cookie cutter cliché shit, hurrdurr the gods are cunts and you eventually learn of this and beat them, just like in 9 out of 10 JRPGs.
But the way the game is structured with the einherjar and the tributes, and the sideways dungeon exploration and the combo-based battles. That's the good shit.

it's good. it can be a bit slow at points in cutscenes but that's not unusual is you're used to PS1 RPGs.
I only played the original though, so can't comment on the other versions.
