It's not auto aim, it's just an assist. If you aim near someone it'll magnetise to them a slight amount but not enough for it to set sights on them. It's super common to land a good few shots about an inch to the side.

Aim assist is auto aim. There's no escaping it. If you're gaming on a console you're not actually playing your game. Your watching the computer play half the game for you.
