You can, settlements can be upgraded. However the upgrade is automated (the designer does it in the scene editor), the player doesn't get to create the layouts themselves for obvious balance reasons.

I have zero idea how to use spears effectively. The enemy always hugs my nuts so I get -9999999% speed and do zero damage when playing spear and shiled, making me have to two hand it and just smack with it, at which point I'd be much better off using an actual two handed heavy weapon instead.

that's most of the problem really, they need a bit of distance but the AI is programmed to just get right up in your face,
even two handing and thrusting is a pain in the ass because you need to be in the distance sweet spot when really a spear should be fine at any distance unless it's a really long one.

Big if true. What killed M&B for me is the fact that I kept defeating dozens of enemy lords on a daily basis, but they just kept coming back 2 or 3 days later with troops. I could beat the same lord like 5 times in one game week and there was nothing to do unless I captured them as prisoners.

I don't understand your problem, how long have you been playing ? Having a strong horse to command your men from is and was an important factor in combat, along with cavalry in general. If you're in the early game then yeah a lot of it is probably going to be you, alone, killing bandits on horseback.

In late game, battles consist of positioning your troops, picking terrain, rallying your cavalry together, flanking and distracting missile troops, calling your infantry to charge, telling your infantry to not give chase so they stay together. Also there's always the possibility of getting your horse killed out from under you which can and WILL happen once people start throwing a shooting a lot of shit at you.

I ride around in plate armor on a warhorse covered in chainmail, I am the bane of my enemies and kill 50% of them, most of the rest is killed in an unending hail of Warbow arrows.

The thread is going to be buttblasted about this, but vanilla is horribly unbalanced and heavy cavalry basically trumps everything. Spears and ranged NPCs do absolute shit, so it is just limited to circling enemies on horse. The only exceptions are sieges, but you're not playing this game for the godawful sieges.

If you don't like it, download one of many mods that rebalance the game.

Sadly there's not money to be made with such a game (unless you go shit indie route with a one-man studio, what I want is at least decent production values), it's a niche within a niche. Along with what others said, while the graphics are dated they are 'updated dated'. Warband's graphics were dated circa 2006 and it came out in 2010. Bannerlord's are dated to early to mid 2010s.

It's Calradian Empire circa a fall of the Roman Empire, Attila era basically.

Ayrabs. I'm really excite they elected to go with an authentic Rashidun caliphate style arab army instead of the stereotypical bedouins with scimitars or horse-archers. But I'll probably bounce between the Southern Empire and them. In general I'll be oriented more to the east and south than the west and north.

Graphics for a game like Mount and Blade have to be "dated". Because this is a game with a fuckload of models onscreen, and horses and projectiles going around and whatnot. You won't get, what's the best looking game now, those kind of graphics when you have so many models onscreen, and they're all moving and throwing projectiles and all kinds of shit is going on. Also they want to add destructible parts to castle if memory serves me right, so that's just more resources to use.

I'm sure it'll be modded up. Personally I'd like to see a "Calradian Republic" mod that sets the clock back to around 200BC. Yeah I am not complaining about it. I started on M&B back in 2005 and it was some of the most fun I ever played, ditto with Warband. I will reiterate what I have said before to give some of you a new perspective on this game

This game is not being actively made. They are getting government grants for funding, so what they are going to do is "make" the game indefinitely in order to keep receiving grants.

This happened with Duke Nukem Forever, with corporate investors. They got new investment like 8 times so they just "kept making" the game, they weren't even actually working.
