Nah, I don't think those people were really reading the manga, she was talking about how she was in love with Chiaki very early on, the only way for them to be surprised is if this was the only one yuri manga they ever followed and they were too used to romcoms and harem that only ever progress to at best a kiss at the very end of the series.

It's the difference in demographics, straight romance in shonen magazines are mostly for young boys and some adults who didn't grow out of the self inserting phase, so showing intimacy is a deal breaker because it's unrelatable to them since they don't have those experiences or feel unconfortable reading them, yuri is clearly for an older demographic and it shows by how much series no matter how casual they look have the characters geting intimate usually to the point they have sex, the yuri readership usually wants to see every milestone in the relationship and if the author is good enough he or she may be able to continue the story with relationship drama.

I don't know if this is true. VNs are the ultimate self-insert experience and they have plenty of sex/kisses in them. Clearly not all people who have no experience with romance are turned off by intimacy.

I think those are different types of self inserting experiences for different types of demographics too, either you have less grounded stories that are more like power fantasies, so the character having relationships is not an issue, or you have VNs that are bordeline erotica and would be a closer experience to a hentai manga than a romcom or harem.

Seems to me that the issue is that sex and actual relationships make the characters unrelatable to their target demographic, you don't have real romantic progression in those stories, the characters just are eternally stuck on the teasing part and then they directly skip to the moment they realize they were in love, but they don't really develop much chemistry between them to make the actual relationship feasible, most of the time there is no actual reason for those characters to be together, especially when the MC is supposed to be a loser characters who never gets better.

It's a shame it's not in Yuri Hime so we could hope for a borderline-H chapter next but maybe it'll still give us something considering what that Kurou series gets away with.
