Luffy was able to hold his own against Kaido with COC + COA before resorting to Gear 4, and he had only recently learned how to use the two in conjunction. He has a lot of potential even without the fruit, and this focus on haki might be a build up towards Luffy not needing a DF, and he's already stronger than most characters without his DF. Either BB steals the fruit or Luffy willingly gives it up because he may not want to be JoyBoy. Luffy isn't the type of person who would want say "Yeah I'll be joyboy because the prophecy said so."
