Can someone explain to me why all of Fujimoto's faces look like lifeless mannequins? At first I assumed it was a deliberate stylistic choice to evoke a sense of eeriness to his characters, like there is more going than their faces let on. But EVERY FACE he draws look like this. I'm starting to think it may not be intentional.

All the facial features are isolated and don't react to neighboring features, the shapes of the head also remains the same. Look at the kid on the right, despite having a very different face expression, the shape of the head is exactly the same as the girl's.

Fujimoto's artstyle is crude and amateurish but definitely not mannequin-like. I know I'm responding to bait but it's obvious Fujimoto can make his characters expressive when he has to. It's just that most of them are stoic looking most of the time (if you read the stories you'll know why) But when things call for it, he can make them emote more.

None of the other background characters had faces you could confuse for each other. But he intentionally drew Eri and Eri’s friend as though they could be the same person in make-up and same with old-yuta and yura’sdad.
It’s done in order to bamboozle the audience and leave them guessing even more. Bravo , Fujimoto.

Does this really mean that much to you? Anyways, the examples in those don't look anything at all like the mannequin head. Simply saying it's bad without proving it doesn't make you right. Also yes, it's not meant to be 100% realistic, hence it looks phony. This isn't Vagabond where the characters are meant to be very close to realism (except for the eye sizes). Fujimoto's stuff is purposely cartoony and the proportions are all anime as fuck.
