He took his father's last name, that is the normal convention in America. I don't know if that is different for hispanic or latino people; but I'm middle eastern and it is common to take the fathers first name as a last name for the son, but since my parents moved to the US and I was born here, we followed the American naming convention.

There are no "middle names" in Spanish. If he was born in a Spanish-speaking country his name would be George Guzmán Izquierdo. The paternal surname comes first (Guzmán, the one he would give his kids) then the maternal surname (Izquierdo, because María is obviously a name and her maternal surname is not shown).

No it would be George Guzmán Izquierdo you take your father and mother's paternal last names.

Anyway it's probably a case of the American government fucking up his parents' last names, that shit is very common with older Latinos and Hispanics.

It's easier to identify who's who in a family and you can tell all the relations. Anglo system is basic and tribal. Take a look:

Spanish naming system:

[Name] [Paternal surname] [Maternal surname]. You can easily identify who the mother is, who the father is and who the children are.

English system:
