Let's be honest. Was anything in web animation from the early to late 2000s actually funny? Even the edgier parts of the era's humor haven't aged well.

Some of it is still funny, but some of it was only funny in the moment.

Newgrounds is proof that independence is a giant monkey's paw.

its like underground comics from the 70s; you CAN enjoy now but you really had to be there to appreciate it.

Yes that’s why Zach was able to get a show.

No, it only had novelty value.

Not really, most people who are obssesed with newgrounds nowadays are just there because of that gay rhythm game or because their favorite e-celeb said they really liked the website when they were young plus you have to create an account to watch porn on there now

There were a couple of gems, but most of it doesn't hold up. I remember rewatching Sonic Shorts a few years ago and every genuinely funny short was sandwiched between four cringetastic ones.

Harry Partridge is funnier than almost any Disney, CN and Nick show of the 00s and funnier than anything from 10s and 20s so far

Oney, Egoraptor, Speedosausage, Sexual Lobster and Spazkid are all genuinely funny

David Firth was funny when he wanted to be

>Egoraptor
He's a good animator, but you can't be over the age of ten and find this shit funny,
youtube.com/watch?v=sXasCjUTNpE

Pube Muppet was god damn hilarious.

Yes
newgrounds.com/portal/view/18

Girlchan in Paradise was funnier and more clever than literally any cartoon on tv right now

The fact Smiling Friends is funnier than Family Guy, South Park and Simpsons right now show that newgrounds was right

Being better than those shows isn't saying much user. The bar is below the earth.

You're comparing to the lowest common denominator. Smiling Friends is good, but compared to other AS shows, it's standard fare.
>literally any
Sure bud.

Comedy wasn't even a majority of content unless you were a nintenyearold watching upteenth mario/megaman/pokemon parody.

Newgrounds had lots of:

* introspective & art-inclined stuff by amateurs and junior art students (none good for today's standards also brakenwood/bitey)
* lots of experimental shorts by people who were really into alternative stuff (salad fingers et all)
* people who loved flash for flash's sake (fancypants, shift)
* perverts
* rule of cool (every stick figure video ever, madness combat)
* a fucking 20 episode school delinquent flash anime series
* the newgrounds oldboys crew that made a lot of self-referential & adult humour ie stamper & fulp's shorts
etc, etc

people tend to forget how young people were in core newgrounds golden age.
a good 40% of NG was 18 years old making fan parodies for 13 years olds. They made animation by themselves for themselves and didn't really have fancy aspirations until the LP meme happened.

"Newgrounds style" comedy was basically a minority until people mentioned in youtube eceleb shitters

What do you mean?

If you let just anyone make whatever they want, your platform is going to be shit.

No

>guy posts on newgrounds
>fine and dandy
>same guy posts the same shit on youtube
>GODDAMN ECELEB SHITTERS GAAAHHH

The site slogan is "Everything by Everyone" aka everybody could share anything they wanted, so of course most of it would be shit just like most deviantart content are just MLP and Sonic recolors. They still had a couple dozen of fun, funny and interesting content creators with talent or even professional training a similar number to the number of good cartoons made by the american industry.

>They still had a couple dozen of fun, funny and interesting content creators
Like?

I'm genuinely curious what OP considers good humor? Not even in a sarcastic way, I really want to know.

Personally, I went to Newgrounds for the action-based series, games, and porn.

I used to fucking hate this cartoon as a kid (more pre-teen, but still), but now I think it's fucking hilarious, because I imagine how mad it makes people, and that idea alone makes me laugh really hard.
I just wish Newgrounds didn't change their layout to replicate Twitter, because I seriously cannot fucking stand mobile-tier endless scrolls on desktop. They are the antithesis of good web design.

just looked up and no you can watch stuff still

>generic buzzwords
wow dude you really showed him with that snappy critique of yours

I love David Firth's creepy and morbid shit, but when he wants to be funny he's fucking hysterical.

Yes, but I question your intent on this thread OP. Are you seeking an answer our simply to be a contrarian for some imaginary intelect points like reddit?

Mao Mao is from a Newgrounds artist as well.

I only ever watched the sprite animations. Fight scenes with Mario or Mortal Kombat characters, that kind of thing.

>Unfunny chuds trying to tell me what's funny

Those guys from newgrounds made animations for Adult Swim.

>Start getting really into Newgrounds about roughly 3 years ago
>Incredibly intrigued with both it's content and role as a creator driven art platform in the era of the internet that wasn't shit
>Become an avid fan of old Newgrounds content
>Aforementioned shitty "BEEP BOOP BEEP" rhythm game suddenly releases and proceeds to blow up
>zoom zooms who watched youtubers play it discover Newgrounds and proceed to shit it up
>Any online discussion about Newgrounds inevitably leads back to FNF's cancerous twitter drama and its now seen as dumb pointless kiddy shit that never had any value
Are we just not allowed to have nice things anymore

>How could anyone watch this stuff! It doesn't have any wojacks in it!

>HELLO MY GOOD MAN, I AM THE PUBE MUPPET.

My friends and I would have competitions to see how long we could listen to different Pube Muppet videos in a row. I think the record was an hour and a half

I just wanted a stealth nostalgia thread.

You do notice that thanks to newgrounds policy some of the most emblematic content of the internet came to be, leading to many current staples of animation and video games, right?
If anything, it's the oposite of what you are implying.
On the other hand every single day we have several threads to complain about the current quality of cartoons and animation, in a world that has a lot less "made by everyone" due to changes in the way the internet works and the closing of flash.

Either complain about the "bad old days" and go to the threads that complain about the current state of animation to say they are wrong, or be positive here. Obviously you could just say "it's all shit" but in such a situation your maxim is also proven wrong, because one thing is not related to the other.

This is my final attempt not to fuck up my message

>HELLO MY GOOD MAN, I AM THE PUBE MUPPET. I HAVE ARRIVED AT THIS Yea Forums THREAD TO REQUEST SOME ITEMS AND SERVICES, FRIENDLY SHOPKEEPER. FIRST, I WANT ALL THE IMAGES ON THIS THREAD TO BE REPLACED WITH PICTURES OF ME AND MY PUBIC FAMILY ENGAGING IN HOMOEROTICISM. SECOND OF ALL, I WANT MY OWN BOARD CALLED /pubemuppet/ WHERE MILLIONS OF MY ADORING FANS CAN HAVE CONVERSATIONS WITH ME AND ALSO WATCH ME BEING REALLY GAY. I WILL HAVE EVERY FEMALE POSTER BANNED FROM THE BOARD SO ONLY HOT BEEFY HUNKS CAN STARE AT MY SEXINESS. I WILL HAVE BIG FAT FAGGOTS JIGGLE THEIR MANBOOBS IN MY FACE SO I CAN GET A SPICY REDHOT BONER. I WILL UPLOAD MILLIONS UPON MILLIONS OF TERABYTES OF ME SHAKING MY ASS IN MY PIECE OF SHIT WEBCAM FROM LIKE 2005. I WILL START A STREAMING WEBSITE WHERE FANS CAN SEE ME FUCK A BILLION MIDGETS WTH RUBBER DILDOS FOR ARMS AND LEGS AND PAY FOR THE PREMIUM SUBSCRIPTION SERVICE. IN THIS SUBSCRIPTION SERVICE, I WILL GO TO EACH AND EVERY USER'S HOUSE TO SHOW MY HOT THROBBING PECKER LIVE IN ACTION. I WOULD ALSO LIKE SOME POTATO CHIPS, BUT NOT JUST ANY POTATO CHIPS, THE POTATO CHIPS MUST BE NACHO CHEESE FLAVOR. YES, THAT WILL BE SWELL!

>I'm sorry, sir, but we are all out of nacho cheese flavor. Would you like some cool ranch?

>...WHAT THE FUCK. WHAT KIND OF NASTY GAY ASS PIECE OF SHIT ESTABLISHMENT IS THIS. FUCK OFF AND LET ME BE.

>Wait a minute, sir, the nacho cheese potato chips are up my ass. My bad.

Tired my nest to replicate the style

>thanks to newgrounds policy some of the most emblematic content of the internet came to be
>people still think this is a good thing

elaborate

This is still the greatest cartoon ever made.

newgrounds.com/portal/view/28240

As I recall, even jnthe times there were "camps" of animators and fans. There were a few really good cartoons that were made with a certain amount of artistry. Those were rare and expensive, and didn't have as wide of appeal. That group hated the more popular Egoraptor style "kids are searching for Mario so what if Mario killed Luigi" content, which was just childish and stupid but only found online.

Then there were the auters like Niel Cicerga or SexualLobster who just made their own things that were funny and talented, and kept improving over the years until the new internet finally forced them into different career paths just because those guys never brought the low-effort clicks of "Spiderman Elsa Buries Thomas the Tank Engine Alive Pewdiepie LeafIsHere DRAMA Needles Johnny".

>Turd of the Week award
>August 22, 2001
Yeah, that sounds about right

>you can't be over the age of ten and find this shit funny,

You could say that about literally any of the Shrek movies.

Sorry I can't appreciate the artistry of "I got stoned and wanted to make something 'funny'/'scary'/'cool' #3785426"

>Harry Partridge is funnier than almost any Disney, CN and Nick show of the 00s and funnier than anything from 10s and 20s so far

Attached: I will always use this forever.png (211x120, 18.7K)

You're probably imagining "Badger Badger Mushroom", but there was also stuff like "There She Is".

Honestly the internet was more fun when stuff like Weebl was top dog of the internet. "Idiot reacts" and other modern formats are more vampiric than Mario parodies ever were because they're exploiting brands they don't own purely for cash.

I'd argue the internet today is massively more homogenous and mediocre. It's hard to find anything really bad or really good.

How about you appreciate the artistry of "picking up a dictionary and checking what 'elaborate' means" instead of getting defensive like a child

Honest question which 10s or 20s show is funnier?

Now Ark... don't you eat this pieeeeeee....

Attached: 1455128788006.jpg (400x196, 19.56K)

So, since some people trying out their hand and starting new stuff that in now way were you forced to watch, didn't met up your standards, it is therefore invalid to appreciate all the good that came with it?
This was the place were people started working and where you could, and still can, see the growth in quality from first try to later attempts, in parallel of the stuff that just came out being funny, intentionally or not, by coincidence or a flight of inspiration from the author.

Also, "Staple" would mean the stuff people regularly enjoying, not a trend of content you consider bad (which is irrelevant since taking this to the subjetive taste is idiotic).

Internet was generally more fun when people were creating stuff just for the hell of it instead of a paycheck from youtube

I'm pretty sure react videos are just exploiting the algorythm somehow with some loop in the mechanics without people actually watching it, even let's players have some appeal but reacters are just people pretending to give a fuck about a video in a bad acting on purpose without trying to be funny, very similar to those indian videos that used to flood the side. Reactors never cause drama, not have fanart because they have no fans

You can, but considering that they have actual jokes further than "characters screaming incoherently at eachother for an hour and a half" you'd have a hard time backing that up.

Tear Along the Dotted Line

Eh. That's not actually true. When Youtube was not dominant and was competing to have good content people actually wanted to watch, there was a massive flurry of paid, creative content. In fact one thing that attracted the old Newgrounds animators to Youtube was the possibility of income.

The entire landscape changed after Blip went belly up, and with it, the last of Youtube's competition. Shortly afterward, they quit trying to grow YOUR audience. Anyone on Youtube was Youtube's audience. They nixed the main point of the subscriber function and only notified users of content deemed to be addictive and frequent. They demanded longer content, faster, at less cost. Youtube maximized profit and minimized quality. They crowdsourced all the risks of making the content.

People can not go back to making passion projects in this market, because the attention is diverted to lower cost cash cows. The internet got to be a corporate monopoly and artists, users, and talent have all become vestigial to that environment.

I tend to blam any and all fnf shit just because of this, which is mainly a kid uploading his fnf mod gameplay to the portal

it was a website that let a bunch of teenagers compete with each other making funny cartoons with no budget or education
it wasnt meant to be taken seriously

I really REALLY disagree. Any other?

Personally I like being low key just making animations for a small audience, it's a lot less stressful and people tend to get too attached to the "gods of web animation" and take everything they do too fucking seriously. I like to make my passion projects and hope other people enjoy it, that's pretty much it.
