Have 2 favorite characters in a franchise

>have 2 favorite characters in a franchise
>want to read shipfics with them
>go to AO3
>find dozens of fics where it's clear the author blatantly likes one of the characters more (usually the more popular one)
>the other character is made into the popular character's passive submissive bitch (not even sexually, just in their everyday communication where the popular character utterly controls and sets the tone for all of their interactions)
>the fics are essentially about how great and interesting the author's favorite character is while the other one is just sort of there to be a meek support/plaything to them
>tfw you like the less popular character more and want to read some good fics with them but can't find a lot because it's all shit like I described

Why are fanfic writers like this?
Is it because they just wanna write about themselves dating the popular character but direct self-inserts are shamed so they instead latch onto a popular ship and warp the other character's personality to be more like themselves?

What does "gen" mean here?

>the fics are essentially about how great and interesting the author's favorite character is while the other one is just sort of there to be a meek support/plaything to them
Just say superbat/batlantern OP

Rated G fics, but also used to say "no pairing".

It's because they only appreciate character A but ship characters A and B anyway due to popular convention. Or they don't understand character B and write them as shallowly and fandom conventionally as possible. To them character A/reader is a smidge too cringe should as it be, but that is what they really want.

But tell us who they are, OP. C'mon.

>Why are fanfic writers like this?
Because they project themselves onto the popular character and then use the less popular character as their ideal partner: one who is always submissive and will do anything for the popular one.

>implying most fanfic writers are not submissive as fuck

Alright maybe obedient is a better word.

If anything I think most self-insert as the obedient character. Especially female writers.

where are all my Yea Forums fanfic writers at

bump

Me x OP's dad (me on top)

Who the fuck reads fanfics? ANY fanfics. I get writing them because people need a horny outlet but reading them? What the christ.

be the change you want to see in the world and start writing fics user

not all fanfics are horny man, that's what the "gen" part of the graph is
and in my experience non-horny fics can sometimes be very very good. In the sea of self insert and porn shit there are a few gems, often written by close-to-middle-age people with real skills, and once you find them it's like you found a whole new quality canon story to enjoy

>Have 2 favorite characters in a franchise
>Want to read shipfics with them
>Even just friendshipfics
>tfw they don't exist
>tfw canon ruins their characters or treats them like shit
I fucking hate Seven Deadly Sins.

What if you really like a setting/characters and want to see more of their adventures, especially without the constraints of budget and censorship?

Fanfics aren't just porn, coombrain. I like to read the Gen ones or AUs that give me interactions between characters I wouldn't see in comics.

I can only imagine the pain fans of obscure franchises with like less than 10 fanfics on AO3 go through.

Is there a way to copy text from wattpad? I like to copy and paste the fics in a TTS program and listen to them.
Its a good option if you finish a book and are left wanting more

In Chrome right click, View page source and then lurk around opening up tags until you find the fic. It's long and cumbersome, but I don't know any other ways. Also why the fuck are you reading Wattpad to begin with? You do know most of it is written by literal children right?

It takes a brave soul to fix this and write 50 smut one-shots.

>nobody likes lesbos
why do they get so much pandering then

Anyone know of a place where i can read shipping fics between two specific character archetypes instead of just two specific characters?

Because
1. Most fanfic writers are girls. Girls aren't into lesbian shit. Yurifags are almost exclusively incel boys.
2. The people in charge of most media companies are old white men, who find gay boys icky. hence why they push the less popular gay archetype because it's less threatening to there sexuality.

>Girls aren't into lesbian shit. Yurifags are almost exclusively incel boys.
That's a lie. My favorite yuri pairing has been poisoned by tumblr lesbians coming to write about "their favorite beans!!! >333" and insisting on shoe-horning them into their retarded archetypes.

I think there’s also an idea from a lot of former Tumblr denizens that F/F is more “progressive” since it’s two women in love, as opposed to two men.

It's not that nobody likes lesbians it's that there are less main female characters in most stuff, and even less interesting ones, so statistically there are much less interesting f/f pairings to write about. With women centric media you usually get a ton of f/f content in fics.

>Most fanfic writers are girls. Girls aren't into lesbian shit.
It's funny because a lot of these Fandom obsessed chicks are apparently "queer"/lesbians and love to gloat about how much they love women and female characters then all they consume/produce is yaoi shit

in a way it's almost a blessing since there is the habit of current day "fans" of some more obscure/older franchises to "revalue" its stories and write tl;dr tumblr/twitterposts about how one half of the stories ship is actually super triggering. Most of the time they don't get far enough to write fanfics for the fandom, so thank god for that, they just bitch on their blogs.

My specific example for this is My Fair Lady (I like musicals) and me recently finding out how much the current crop of its """fans""" shit on Henry Higgins. Dude's not a great guy, but they completely miss the point of his character. It's funny to see the older fics for the fandom, let's say from 10-15ish+ years ago and the writers having no problem with his relationship with Eliza.

just googled "why do lesbians write gay fanfic" and it gave me this old tumblr post. I think that's an interesting answer. basically lesbians project on gay males

>my F/F fics don't get enough views
desu that's kind of a shitty excuse. My M/F fic doesn't get much traction since it's an unpopular pairing, but I don't give a shit. And I've never understood why anyone should with fanfiction. It's nice when people get into your story, sure, but maybe I don't just understand the culture around fanfic writing. It's just for fun, not fame.

Also this is a side note, but the first time I watched Amok Time I knew about the reputation it had as the gayest Star Trek episode that more-or-less spawned the Spock/Kirk ship, but I was endlessly amused by the actual story being about Kirk fucking hating Vulcan culture and seething the entire runtime. There was that one part at the end where Spock was overjoyed at seeing Kirk alive and I'll give the shippers that, but the rest of the episode had more of a case for Christine Chapel/Spock than him and Kirk.

yeah I agree I don't create my fan content for fame, but a lot of people are obsessed with notes/comments/kudos etc and will stop if a niche pairing doesn't get them enough attention/interactions

Anyone know of any good tomboy fics?

To be fair, most fanfiction is written so people can project on one of the characters. Hence why a lot of fanfic writers struggle when they have to write original fiction. They’re accustomed to writing tropes and creating characters so bland that readers can easily self-insert as them. Actually creating a complex and engaging character is hard.

How IS Wattpad as a platform? I've been on both FF.net and AO3 in the past, never been to Wattpad.

It's babby's first fanfiction website. Literally. Most of the people reading and writing there are children and teens. Surprisingly though, I've heard there apparently were SOME published authors on there? Likely some YA shit.

Actually well-written genfics (which are extremely rare) are very fun to read. And I’m talking near professional quality well-written, not by fanfic standards well-written. There’s probably no more than a couple dozen of this quality in even the biggest fandoms, but when you find one, it’s great.

>Likely some YA shit
this. I can't name any specific book, but I have heard some One Direction fanfic got made into a YA novel, plus there are more.

>One Direction fanfic

That makes me laugh.

I’ve written a couple. Gotta get back to it.

crack treated seriously genfics are almost always gold

the One Direction fanfic writers are insane, but they've been dethroned by kpop - mostly BTS - fans nowadays. The amount of times you go to some fandom's AO3 page and see the ungodly amount of BTS shit pop up is too much to handle.

>but I have heard some One Direction fanfic got made into a YA novel
It's worse than that, it got made into a movie.
It's called After.
It also just had a sequel announced.

>In 2013, author Anna Todd posted the first chapters of a fanfiction titled After on fanfiction- and fiction-publishing website Wattpad.[3] The fanfiction's original storyline was based on the boyband One Direction, and featured the band's members Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik, portrayed as students at Washington State University. The story followed Tessa Young, an "innocent good girl" who becomes involved in a relationship with "bad boy" Styles.
>Within a month of publishing the first chapters, the story had acquired 544 million reads; Todd later landed a deal with Simon & Schuster to publish novelizations of the series, with the lead male character's name changed to Hardin Scott;[3] the novels were subsequently released in 2014.
oh my god, why?

It's not all porn and romance. There's a lot of stuff out in all kinds of genres. The vast majority is garbage of course, but I browse Yea Forums, so I'm used to digging through shit for the occasional diamond.

And there's some genuinely fantastic gems out there. I've read fanfic that's better written than a lot of published fiction. I once stumbled on a Rashamon style murder myster about the downfall of a frontier town that was written entirely in verse. It was one of the most unique things I've ever read and I think it's kind of a shame that I'll basically never be able to share it or talk about it with anyone because it's so niche. Cause who the fuck would ever listen to me recommend a fanfic poetry anthology?

True.

>write maybe 4K word one-shots in span of weeks
>what I want to tell is done trim and neat
>fuckers crank out 10k words in a weekend for one chapter
How do they do it?

Most cartoons until recently had only 1 main girl in it.
Two if you were lucky.

>How do they do it?
Horny, it's a hell of a drug.

proof FFN is the best fanfic site

AO3 is better.

I've been writing one for a while and while progress is slow and it's all over the place I've been really proud of myself for it

What I'm getting from this pic is that AO3 is gay as hell for some reason and somehow fucking Wattpad has the least amount of shipping garbage by volume. How the hell did that happen?

AO3 allows porn.

Being a fast typist helps. Also, sometimes you just hit a vibe and things tumble out at warp speed.

My last major fanfic wound up clocking in at a little under 50,000 words, and I wrote most of that over the span of three days. In particular, on the first day alone I wrote about 15,000 words.

AO3 has a better interface & it’s better if you like to write crossovers as your stories are still inserted into the same feed as non-crossover ones, but the focus on smut is a bit tiresome if you like/write genfic.

Pretty sure FFN still bans loli/shota, so no.

ao3 has a bunch of better features and no bots but yeah it is super gay

also when a character you liked gets done really bad in the canon it can be refreshing to find well written stuff that does them better

kpopfags are unbelievable
they probably are the absolute worst fandom of all media honestly

I was trying to find Scott-Emma fanfics once and it was a nightmare
