They make their money through investment rounds to grow their userbase, selling it as an investment to either late stage monitization or a big buyout exit. Almost no tech companies make money until their one of the big boys with near monopolies. Despite Netflix being the leader atm, it's still a very competitive market. Growing your userbase is the name of the game at this stage, not profit.
