Disclaimer: I have no use for the Doomwanked, Byrnefag Version where Doom is en "enlightened monarch" and all he wants is "peace and love and an end to strife and all that "wondrous" stuff and such and such and such...". It's the most horrible, swallow, boring, version of the character and I absolutely loathe it. You cannot imagine how much I hate it. Almost as much as I hate that orange harlot from Clone Wars. No, the Doom I like is wicked, manic, greedy, lustful, petty, violent, self-hating, self-doubting, and so much more. Yes, he is brilliant (but not as much as he'd like). Yes, he is competent (but not as much as he'd like to believe). Yes, he can be charming and animalistic. But he's not "good". He is beyond that. He's not some "so reletable" simpleton who watches Star Trek. He's Napoleon. He's Von Braun. He's Odysseus. Yes, he can be good to his people, provided they obey (obey! OBEY!). Yes, he can make life "better" (according, always to him). Yes, he sees himself (mostly) as a "Great Hero". But he's not the globohomo "peace and love for all" type that's prevailent. It's a very simplistic view of the world, and especially "his" world, born out of a New York Neo-Liberal mindset that projects its values everywhere. To cut this short, he's Duality. He's Fire and Brimstone. He's Creation AND Destruction. One in Two and Two in One. A living contradition. In short, he's a King; a Conqueror; a Dragon.

Well, since you asked so nicely. The way I see it, all versions miss that "something" that completes Doom. They all attach themselves to a certain trait and overindulge in it. Anyway, here it is:
After the machine blows up, he suffers a very small scar. A bump on the left cheek. It's barely noticeable. Maybe another one bellow the chin, as "invisible" as the other one. Maybe one on the nose, too. Small, tiny. The thing is, they're ugly. To him, they look like craters. Ugly holes that make him seem weak, repulsive. At first, he has an idea. He takes a knife and starts cutting his cheek, in an effort to turn it into a "cool scar". A symbol not of failure, but something that alludes to a battle. A child's idea of maturity. But it's no use. It's quite hard permanently scar yourself; such cuts heal. Soon, he starts noticing other imperfections. A bit of a receeded hairline. The two sides of his jaw not being absolutely symmetrical. They keep pestering him, even as time moves on. Eventually, he adopts the mask. It's a refuge. It's a symbol of power. It's a way for the insecure, "imperfect" man to become something more. He knows that he's not deformed. He's not mangled, and deep down he knows that he has no compulsion to wear a mask. But, as with most things in his life, he LARPs and pretends. It's better to "believe" that he's such a narcissist that he'd "petically" go over the edge, than admit that he's merely a man. It's an attempt to begin turning himself into a Myth, and less of a compulsive coping mechanism.

I mean there are times when I read his comics when I am, "Whoa, why do I like this character again?!".
The way he acts and lashes out, like flooding the surface world, declaring war, trying to get with a married man's wife.
He's everything classic superheroes are not, he does't care about crime unless it effects him and has to be tricked into helping. Yet he is noble in his own way. You can count on if Namor gives you his world, it carries its weigh in gold. Roy Thomas run has him fretting if he's doing the right thing or not and trying to mature like in John Byrne's run.
He is totally alone in the world, both worlds hate him. Surface world things he's mad and Atlantis thinks he's too soft with many dethroning him saying that they could do a better job. Lady Dorma, Doom, the Defenders (love/hate) and Captain America are the few people that are his friends. It is only a villain that actually understands the weight of wearing a crown, the same friend that always gets him into trouble.
Namor is very polarizing and I think thats why he's so enduring. Aquaman even took aspects and added to his lore. Peter David's run where blonde hair is a sign of a tyrant wizard comes to mind as well as Geoff John's angry young Aquaman during his youth.

Well, thank (you). I find most Doomfags to be disgusting plebs, so I do somewhat pride myself on understanding the character better. Which is weird, since it's not that hard to read him. Depends. I don't have a "thousand yard stare", I haven't been through anything traumatic. I'm just a bit aloof, I'd say. I didn't like it when I was younger. Teachers always thought I was "depressed" (never was). I don't get "depressed". I wallow in melancholy here and there, but only because it feels good. I'm a rather cheerful guy, really. But I can't make that clear with just my appearance. I tried for a while. I overexaggerated those traits. I ended up looking like a clown, I think. So now I've accepted that it's just my face. It seems frowny or some such. Nothing can be done about it. So I don't go around changing my demeanor. It is what it is and always was. Maybe they were right. Maybe I was just "born old".

Why yes, I am impressive.
Thank you, Based Riderfag. In all honesty, I never even went through an edgy atheist phase. Kinda. I did have my "le enlightened outbursts", but I never took off my crucifix or missed a prayer. I don't know why, really. I can't "feel" anything but I... want to? Need to? I don't know. It keeps me up some nights. Especially since I can't reconcile it with who I am. But that's another talk. I did have a couple of "muh doomer blackpills" months, but I don't know, pure nihilism never really was my style. Even then, I just found some comfort in the notion that "oh, woe is me, I was broken from the start", which made me complacent. Because hey, if you're "broken inside :(" you never have to try and overcome hardships. That was the comfort of it, just a false sense of security which was quite destructive. Anyway, that's in the past. In truth, I suppose that nihilism never meshed with my worldview. Neither of the two meme-tier versios of internet nihilism. If I'm being honest, I've fallen behind on my philosophy reading due to studies, but I doubt further research could change my mind. I see it as a very defeatist mindset that does more harm than good in the long run. I can't just believe that it's all for nothing. That there's no inherent meaning, even if that is merely a biological imperative to keep moving forward. This can't be all there is. I can't accept that. I won't.

I like Hellboy because it uses the Occult and the various Myths and Folklore really, really well. Yeah, BPRD is a bit of a mixed bag, but in general I feel the whole universe is well executed. Hellboy being an alcoholic, poor shot, balding guy makes him stand out a bit, too. It's generally a pretty heartfelt journey, but I can see how it might not be everyone's cup of tea. I was never that much into mainstream horror, but I love Gothic and Gothic Romances, so it's right up my alley. There are some interesting works but I don't find the culture to be relatable enough from my european perspective so I haven't delved into it much. I have a liking for some of the cinema but that's the extent of it.

Yes i'm really keen on more intimate comics moments, however i do love action specially if it is balls to the walls crazy actions with all freedom to explore and no fear like Tank Girl for example.

Goddamn I agree with this. Aaron’s run was so fucking shit because he was trying to make him hipper by the pop culture reference bullshit among other reasons. I’ll admit I started reading Strange from the Oath and then worked my way from the start. It became pretty rough from the 90s onwards, but at least I’m enjoying Waid’s run right now

You might be right about the duality thing user. I mean I do admit that I like Aquaman. He’s got a better costume and his telepathy with fish powers is awesome. DC has given Aquaman some good stories and a good supporting cast over the years and he does act more like the classic hero than Namor.
I think how each company has handled their aquatic hero speaks volumes on their business practice. Namor in the true Marvel Method has his personality be the driving force of his stories. He is flawed but noble, he doesn’t get along well with others and has a large ego (which he often backs up).
Aquaman is defined like most DC characters (this could be argued nowadays) by events. DC’s heroes all had the same personality until Stan and Jack came on to the scene. So early Aquaman was a nice guy and very fatherly who always did right. What separated him from say Batman and Superman was that he was married, he lost a son, lead the Detroit JLA, lost a hand and San Diego sunk under the ocean.
Slowly but surely Aquaman was given Namor traits. Quickly lashing out if other heroes upset him, Sub Diego where he attacked Martian Manhunter disguised as Superman and Batman in the new 52. On the flip side, I think early Lee/Kirby Namor copied Aquaman back when he had all the powers of sea creatures and was later forgotten.
Also, I think they both have elderly advisors with the name staring with a V and have a red head noble woman love interest. Which I think Aquaman had first.

You do have a point about him already being "done", character progression speaking. I beleive that you can tell more stories, but in a Cape setting, you're only going in circles. Personally, I'm on my last few months of caring about Capes, so I've mostly delegated him to a memory of a better time, and am actively ignoring whatever "version" is running around. He exists in my mind as an idea, a concept of what could've been, rather than an actual character.

Our early interests always influence our later tastes. I grew up in a similar way too, so I started reading into things like Conan. But I also liked the "Big Brain" characters. Doom is a mix of every single thing I like, so it's why he remains my top.

Lots of people jumped on the GotG bandwagon after the movie. And Tumblr is the biggest crossposting source (or was before it effectively shut down). If you're not that, then I suppose you've been here since the DnA Vol. and grew to like the characters through that (and Annihilation).
I know, I know. But it's always good to have your opinions and beliefs reaffirmed. We all seek validation, after all. In the past, it was pretty tough to create these charts. But as time goes on, and momentary "flings" are erased, I manage to be more honest with myself about what I truly "like".
Bingo. The Aaron run remains one of my biggest regrets, since I bought it in order to support the character. But by God, was it an insult to everything, that anyone interested in Strange, liked. The whole reason people got into him back in the day was because he was an authority figure of immense power and subtle humanity. But no Aaron's gotta Aaron. Personally I started reading from... I can't remember, actually. I saw him in either the 90s Spider-Man show or MUA, just hit the torrents and started from the beginning.

What about the reveal of the secret villain? I jumped when I saw it cause I never expected to see that villain in the big screen.
The only other time I had the same fanboy reaction was when I saw a Kirby's Celestial in Guardians movie. Never in my life did I expect to see a Celestial in all its glory. I'm already kinda disappointed on how they look in the sketches for the Eternal movies.
