Her mother, Destiny, had predicted that Carol would tear Rogue away from her and Mystique (her other mother).
Mystique spent some time trying to mess with her until eventually Rogue sort of got the gist of it and tried to kill her.
Then Carol's heroism rubbed off on her and she joined the X-Men.
