The instigating factor of GamerGate was that journalists who slept with a woman were shilling her dumb game, and when called out on it, immediately began a collusion counter-campaign that immediately blew up in their face.

If they didnt try to snuff it out when it began, it would have just been some shit story that happened and went to the wind, but they kicked up a fuss and had a tantrum and decided to throw shit and thats what caused it. It devolved from there, but it initially was.
