It's literally a transliteration of the phraseology "family helmets." The author heard somebody speak of helmets for their whole family (perhaps they were just getting into cycling?) and for a brief moment he imagined they were just helmets the family wore generally. After another moment he thought "Helmets that read 'FAMILY'" but then eventually the reality set in. Though he did eventually understand the concept, it didn't change the initial thoughts; Those couldn't be erased. So he wrote them down in his comic strip.

is he juggling the trash cans as he wheelies into the night or is he tossing them to the cats like some kind of bizarre Fonzi/Santa/Donkey Kong hybrid???

the helmets are a representation of the individual zeitgeist of their wearer.
In this case the most important thing about their outing is that it's a family outing.
They are going out as a family, as they had decided to have a family activity.
If the purpose for their outing was, for instance, getting hams, then the helmets would have read HAM

Do they paint the relevant new word on the same helmet every time, or do they have tons of helmets that each have some unique thing written on them?

>Heathcliff will tackle your shit and steal your ham like a football player
I get it
>remember that ham helmet joke? Yam rhymes with ham
Huh.
A point at which the helmet has been deconstructed to represent a general affinity

they have multiple blank helmets that they paint each time and then discard, having they served their purpose

lmfao finally one with an actual joke

>individual zeitgeist
Not a thing, zeitgeist is specifically collective, you mean their mindset.

I've explained it to you, stop asking autismo.

>Not a thing, zeitgeist is specifically collective
Individual zetgeist is a philosophical concept introduced y healthcliff comics, and represented by the helmets.
> you mean their mindset.
It goes beyond their mindset, it is a manifestation of the core of their being in that moment in time

He's admitted his writing process is basically stream-of-consciousness.

Holy shit that's fucking hilarious.
