That ending was wack as hell. This show seems to have a problem with the concept of "consequences". The reckless actions of the entire royal has caused some serious irreparable shit, and none of them seem to truly pay for it. On top of that show had no fucking idea what it wanted to be until the last two seasons. Everything about this was a clusterfuck of loose threads and unrealized potential. Seems to be a trend with mainstream cartoons.

It's not really played as a punchline so much as maybe it's not explored in depth and is treated as necessary/a greater-good deal, but:

Star chose to destroy the source of all magic in the multiverse, making the wand useless and destroying the magical abilities of herself, all other Butterflys, and anyone who'd been magically enhanced like the super-soldiers attacking Mewni. As a consequence this also meant that all magical creatures in charge of magic would be wiped from existence.

The death toll included Glossaryck as the god of magic, the remaining members of the Magic High Commission (Reynaldo, Omnitraxus, Rhombuus, and Hekapoo), all the unicorns inhabiting the Realm of Magic which crumbled away to skeletons, and all the sentient spells that Star and all the other queens had created. So not even including the named characters that's like several hundred magical creatures killed at least.

Seeing alternate versions of Star begs the question, we see alternate dimensions, but none of these dimensions have their own Stars. Therefore this is a show that has alternate timelines and alternate dimensions from Mewni and Earth within those timelines.

To be fair, modern animators in general seem to hate children and genuinely believe those little bastards are pushing them down from reaching their true artistic heights. Probably the most egregious example is AT. The staff made a huge effort to alienate children and tried really hard to make a DEEP and meaningful plot with a cartoon about a kid and a magical dog fighting an ineffectual comical villain and defending a bumblegum princess.

Children can be annoying but unlike adults, their minds aren't set down in a mold yet so their imagination run free. Children are innocent and that's why they're cruel in their own special way. Personally I found disgusting modern animators despise children when animation should be the medium that appreciate the most the raw power of imagination and thinking outside the box that school imposed us from our early childhood.

Gravity Falls was mostly satisfying to me. But in terms of "benchmark" satisfaction, I'd say the ending to Babylon 5, since you said "any medium."

In terms of animation, I also liked Fox's Peter Pan and the Pirates, but that wasn't exactly an arc show. I guess it is rare for arc shows that span multiple seasons to have a satisfying ending.

Yeah but, I meant for a show/series in particular. Scooby Doo obviously got more cartoons since, Stargate got Stargate Universe, and Dragon Ball will likely get new cartoons. But MI, SG-1 and DBS had satisfying endings.

And it feels like it's specific to TV stuff. I can think of plenty of written works that ended in a really satisfying way for me, even long-running comics. Narbonic had a great ending.

Its true that the nature of western TV broadcasting has for a long time incentivised a very "stop-start" approach to seasons, making lengthy arc shows difficult or inefficient for profits. Star Trek was originally going to only have 2 seasons, but they campaigned hard for a 3rd one.

I think the reason more recent arc-failures have been more notable than say, the cancellation of Firefly, is because the creators/showrunners are more prominent, and their failing/flaws are more public, and so it is much easier to hate them than a faceless TV corporation.

THAT said, I do -also- think that these showrunners DO have a greater responsibility than they used to, and they are being a lot less mindful of those responsibilities. See the Pendleton Ward conspiracy theory on Youtube for an example.

It's not just western, though. Anime runs into the same issue, even though manga is fully capable of ending in a satisfying way. It really feel endemic to TV broadcasting. Maybe it's just a "production via committee" issue and any successful show will necessarily pick up too many additional bodies in the writing room.
