Factually incorrect, Vriska and Terezi could never close any gap beyond morails due to Vriska's ego and Terezi's mask hiding her own insecurity, which is why she also gave up on Dave and Karkat. And Dave and Karkat themselves might as well be wearing paintings for faces with how many damn layers they wear to hide their true selves.

You know, the lack of auspicitices on Candy-Earth C are a big portion of what lead to lead to its decline to war. None of the friend group were willing to mediate between Jane and Gamzee, and as a result Jane's mentality declined and she became Hitler 3. The humans adopted some of troll culture, but not the necessary safety precautions to keep it from going insane.

Nope. He was Jane's kismesis, Jane just sort of trapped Jake into the relationship by getting both of them drunk, where he knocked her up. He stayed after that to protect his son, Tavros, but he hated the entire thing and didn't know how to escape. Because blackroms were sort of a taboo thing among humans none of them really understood how to manage them when a friend got caught in one.

Yes and no. The way they're originally described and portrayed definitely is, as it's a constantly stream of one-upping the other party that could boil over into actual bloodshed without intervention. But Terezi and John shows that it can be done softer, kinder, appearing more as light teasing and BDSM with sincere undertones, and annoyance with admiration on John's part. A simple safeword would likely be enough of an auspitice for that relationship, if not for any known limits beforehand.

So a bad blackrom partner is one you find attractive but absolutely despise, while a good one is just tsundere.

The thing about there being "healthy" spades relationships is just a running gag (mostly).

also part of it is that they're supposed to encourage parts of you that you don't like to see in yourself for one reason or another. a kismesis is basically trying to help you keep your head out your own ass and thus both dirk and john could really have used one

The scene is played very straightforwardly as tragic, but if you have read meat first, it has a humorous element which distorts the scene and john's suffering to be comedic instead! It's almost like the universe was playing a cruel joke on him.
I think that this might actually be the true tragic theme of the comic, that even sorrowful moments are just a big joke to the narrative.

And John in turn is more than willing to sit down and have an earnest, sincere heart to heart, which is something Terezi desperately needed, to be allowed to drop her mask and expose her heart, to show her insecurities and weakness and have them comforted. This is something that moirails would typically do, and something that John didn't get in his relationship with Roxy, because it was an utter whirlwind romance without either party really getting to know each other, skipping crucial dialogue, and they still didn't really, REALLY talk even after they were married and had a kid.

So their relationship has blackrom, inspiring each other to be their better selves and staying passionate

It was very, very funny, was able to tell an interesting story without compromising that humor, had likable characters with extremely well realized personalities and lots of room for growth and depth, the world was unique, imagantivie and expansive, there was a constant string of mysteries and plot hooks that would actually get satisfying and clever resolutions that made it feel like everything was a part of some greater whole, and there was an amazing transition of scale that never seemed to stop.

Then Act 5 happened, and it became a whole other beast.

Oh, that. I can only speak for myself and my experiences though. Problem Sleuth was this insane ridiculous thing and it's main claim to fame was the user submitted commands. Everyone wanted to have their stupid command illustrated and followed, kinda like those quests on /tg/. So he had a nice base of active followers from PS. Homestuck used to have user commands back then too. I suspect that a lot of the people who used to follow Homestuck from the start were waiting to see what sort of insane bullshit Hussie would pull to exceed Problem Sleuth. I mean, you must remember. Act 1 was just this fucking goober in his house. Totally mundane in comparison.

So he had this large group of fans from PS already interested and following the comic actively right? Then Hussie started working his magic and getting people addicted. Homestuck used to be stupid fucking active. Hussie used to flood people with content and often at erratic times. Webcomics didn't do that back then, it is was unique. Homestuck's flashes and music also set it apart from the crowd. So Hussie busted his ass and made a lot of unique content, and his fanbase steadily grew from PS.

I'd let another user take it from here and explain how it blew up by the time the trolls arrived though. I've never felt the appeal of the trolls so I don't know why teens latched onto them.

And it can't just be chalked up to "character development" or "people change as they get older", because development has to follow a logical path stemming from the base characterization.

The issue with Hiveswap is that I just didn't care about it. Alternia is not a subject I desired to be expanded, and more trolls are not in my interest. But a sequel that stars Rosebot, Davebot, Dirkbot, Terezi, and Calliope-Jade continuing on in a struggle that expands beyond the scope of the previous conflict is one I would read. I am genuinely interested to see that story, so if published I'd read it, be it an extension to Homestuck or a sequel. It's got the stuff I like about Homestuck and the characters I like.

Everyone else just sort of stops using them, and Dirk's suicide isn't even considered as neutral or heroic, it's given a firm Just ruling, meaning he might as well not have even been godtier there. But Jade's still a Space player, so Calliope uses her as a vessel in both realities.

You could say for Kanaya her role kept yielding until the very end. She only gained a second Matriorb right towards the end of Act 6, and then her role in hatching the Mother Grub and resuming natural troll reproduction was the center focus of both elections and rules, and in Candy issue even this spilled over into war.

The point of her character is Reproduction and Mothering and Supporting people, which is why she was fine in Candy, the "get married and have dumb babies" route. Hussie said she had "simplicity and clarity in her goals and desires" and "an unusually coherent heroic arc" by Homestuck standards. Because of that, she reached her goals merely by getting to the end, unlike most characters.

And I like how Hussie/Dirk is literally using this against her to make her do something. Dirk directly calls out how as a character, she's nothing compared to Rose. The thrust of her character is being helpful? Well Kanaya, it would be really helpful if you stopped dragging your wife down to mediocrity. Thanks.

I liked John's increased complexity for the epilogue. He's still the airhead he always was, but in Meat he was told to treat his younger friends as faceless, disposable puppets, and be forced to face the fact that he directly condemned them all to death, then watched all of reality dissolve, while facing his own mortality for the truly first time in his journey. He's facing a whole host of new emotions and experiences, with the guilt of no longer wanting to go back to Earth C despite having everything he could want there. It's a world where he should be happy but he hates it and never wants to go back, and he feels terrible about acknowledging that.
