Big problem with the show was true foreshadowing aspects got presented the same as stuff that isn't supposed to matter so it's impossible to tell what is and isn't important. The problem was also that if they were going to rely on Rule of Cool then they should've filled the show with enough Cool Moments to make it worthwhile. The story wasn't that important and they kept falling back on It Just Works logic especially whenever the Alteans got involved so that would've been their excuse to just overload the show with enough cool shit happening that people wouldn't have a reason to nitpick.
Season 7 had a lot of boring bullshit but was able to get away with it because it had enough hype moments to makeup for it. Season 8 failed because it was sloppy AND boring. The only "cool" moment all season long was Atlastron but nobody cared about that because even the show didn't give it half the fanfare it ought to have.

It's complicated because one of the suits nohomo'd the original Shiro/Adam scene, then they rewrote Adam to be his platonic bestie at the Garrison, then decided he should die to show how dangerous the Galra invasion was. So you're right about. Although even then it's still stupid because the first six seasons already did that enough, and besides they should've picked someone who shows up enough for people to actually give a shit. Later on they were told it was OK to make Shiro and Adam gay after all so they re-edited the original dialogue back in because they thought having a good gay and a buried gay was better than no gays at all. Which would've been fine if they didn't go and overhype the buried gay or how prominent his relationship with Shiro was anyway, knowing the above was all they had.
They also buried another gay or two, and this particular one is 100% their fault and not the suits or anything.

Mediocre is pretty fair. It's not altogether terrible aside from the last season, it's more that it does some things very well and some things very badly and they cancel out, so if you're like me and happen to enjoy the stuff they got right then it's enough.
The shipping happened mainly because the show has appealing character designs that make people lust after them and want to see them fuck, and anything that had to do with Korra will automatically attract a large fanbase of shippers. Plus a period between S2 and S7 where Klance shippers were going around telling outsiders to watch this show because those two were canon gay, only for them to either stomp off in disappointment when it turned out not to be the case or if they did like it they got fanatical about another ship instead.

VLD started okay. It went on too long and failed to escalate properly. You either have to introduce a series of bigger and bigger threats (Zarkkon -> Lotor -> Extragalactic empire Zarkkon was fighting with -> Evil alteans from another dimension) or just keep the same big threat the entire time (Zarkkon) so you can develop him and have him be a legitimate threat.
The way it turned out, it was the worst of both worlds. There was a progression of villains but they were basically all people we already knew, and we were just supposed to believe they magically got stronger than when we were stomping Zarkkon, and of course we kept killing off villains so they could never be developed as much as they should have been.

You can't explain what is going on other than saying good or bad things are happening. There is no internal logical consistency. Its just a hot mess. And then, it ends with this weird epilogue that resolves nothing and doesn't make sense for any of the characters. Also Shiro just marries so rando and its played almost for shock value. Like that last scene in ParaNorman.

To be fair, Shiro was an accident that fucked up the entire show and it's plans.
IIRC they never intended Shiro to be a major character. Just like the OG TV show, Shiro was supposed to die (around S2) in order to allow them to follow GoLion and put Allura into the mix as a lion pilot.
Problem is, they fucked up by making Shiro so fucking likeable and so heavily focused upon, as far as THE main character. So killing him off would risk losing a huge part of the show's audience who considered Shiro THE main character. So they were basically stuck with him and ended up trying their damnest to sideline him (since killing him off was off the table) without killing the show.
