Monsters Abroad

Full-length animatic was just released for a show that was in development at Nick for 5 years, created by Hannah Ayoubi (Harvey Beaks boarder). Had a full series bible and thousands of concept art pieces but was never produced

I call dibs on the slime qt!

i would've loved this as a show.
hell, even a miniseries would do.

do you think there's any hope left for it, or is it doomed to be just this forever?

Looks cute. I like anything with monsters in it.

Doomed as hell, Nick has the rights, the creator is at Disney now, and Nick is completely uninterested in doing ANYTHING original at the moment. Everything on the slate is reboots and they just announced a fucking Lunchables TV show

Just finished it, it was charming and I could see it being really popular with finished animation. Obvious inspiration from some varieties of anime with the boarding school theme but it doesn't overdo it, and boy is it refreshing nowadays for a pilot to have a full 22 minutes to set stuff up.

I don't understand how something like this with boatloads of preproduction development, care, and years of interest gets passed up for cartoons that're thoughtless and crude. This was made in 2014, around the same time nick greenlit a bunch of dumb gross out shows like sanjay and craig. Why? This could've been way more popular than steven universe or gravity falls and it could've come before star vs made girl shows more of a "thing". For fuck's sake, this is basically the exact same setup as the owl house but with a great supporting cast.

Why'd they do this show like that, man? It could've been great.

Thoughtless and crude sells a whole lot better to children (this is just Shōjo slice-of-life Rosario X Vampire)

Does it really? All those crude shows flopped hard and nobody talks about them anymore, with the closest "hit" nick has had being the loud house.

Nick is so very afraid of taking any risks, and the people who make the decisions don’t care about cartoons. The way CH Greenblatt described it, it’s a geographical disconnect - the Nickelodeon Animation Studios in Burbank that actually makes the shows is a wonderfully free and creative place that basically gives creative reign to the artists, while Nick corporate in New York who greenlight and schedule the shows are clueless suits who don’t know jack shit except numbers and what worked for them before in the 90s.

>All those crude shows flopped hard and nobody talks about them anymore

If you're talking about Breadwinners and Fanboy ChumChum, the only reason why they didn't become hits is SpongeBob hogging the glory

They also have a really cynical, kind of evil streak to them where they’re so bitter about having turned down shows that ended up being hits for other networks that they’ll sign creators to a deal and buy up their rights just so other networks can’t have the idea

I'm going to guess they didn't think it wold appeal to the intended demographic or that it was too similar to something being developed in house or in another studio.

The 22 minute length format could have been a no-go.

Maybe they thought the core cast was unappealing? Gonna admit, while I like this I'm an adult and its possible kids might not think the designs for the cast are cute or cool enough. They are weird and interesting but children may not think of appeal in those terms.

I think the problem Nick will soon find itself in if they decide to appeal exclusively to kids is that they aren’t nearly as attached to traditional television programming as previous generations in general with all the entertainment options that have always been available to them - it does seem the current regime at Nick realizes this with all the nostalgic revivals they’ve been attempting, but they also look desperate being afraid of anything new.
This show would have been greenlit at Disney had the creator been able to pitch it before The Owl House (which would have been totally possible), or CN prior to 2016 when Miller aged down the network significantly from any target audience it went for prior, and it would have been a big hit in merchandising. She was just in the wrong place

>Nick has the rights
Fuck that's what? 2? 3 series that Nick got the rights for and then just decided to sat on it?

>Le socially akward and clumsy but cute nerd
>Le proactive kind and atractive friend
Christ, I fucking done with these tropes. 5 minutes in and this shit looks like it's not going to anywhere. It just feel lame and boring and the monster school has been done like a thousand times before.

Attached: 156981693715.png (478x484, 561K)

Probably a lot more than that - I’ve seen animators saying that well over half of projects that officially enter development in the industry never see the light of day

The concept was probably fresher when it was being developed

Fuck Nickelodeon I want this show

mmmm that's too bad user, really a shame, mmm mmm mmm you're never gonna get it. How's it feel, user? How's it feel to know you'll never, EVER get more cute monster girl adventures? How's it feel that not only will this never get resolved but its been dead for most of this decade and that you're only getting scraps of it just now? To know you're licking up the leftovers after daddy nick ate it alive? hmmmm? How's it feel user? How's it feel to be a little bitch? Huh? You want to cry? Maybe piss your pants a little? Maybe shit and cum? God you're pathetic.

Attached: sudalaugh.png (534x582, 507K)

About 16 minutes in, is it weird that I just felt kind of bored, then annoyed, and don't care for the characters so far? I'm actually starting to hate the MC and her best friend whose voice just grates my ears. One's "quirky" but boring and the other's quirky but annoying. I think the one part I liked with them was the voiceless montage.

Wasn't really a fan of this pilot and personally found the MC and her best friend kind of boring/annoying, but the plot was constructed pretty well even if I got bored and I liked the end showing peeks at potential episodes. Has potential, I'm just not very interested in the main 2 characters and I don't find most of the jokes very funny. Dad and Tengu are best boys though

I'll say this: it dragged, but it was stuffed with a lot of heart. This is clearly her (hannah ayoubi) first attempt at doing 22 minute formats, her Harvey Beak boards were awesome, so I'm willing to overlook it. And you need to keep in mind that most pilots don't see completion, so her showcasing all this after years of build up seems appropriate.

I'm still bitter that she never drew Harvfee art tho.

The artstyle is really nice. It actually reminds me a lot more of Euro character designs than any American show I've seen, which is a huge plus for me.

what other shows are nick sitting on

Camp Weedontwancha

Glitch Techs

>the clip that exists is perfect in every way
If Spongebob is ever allowed to die, will that be the thing that lets all these other shows to finally come out into the open?

you can just smell the tumblr lesbian art from the picture

kill yourself

>I'm going to guess they didn't think it wold appeal to the intended demographic

This, if the characters were all in grade school, than maybe they would've

No, because Nintendo aka Viacom is run by literal soulless corporate drones who are endlessly churning trying to create the next Spongebob and failing time after time. The Loud House is the closest they've ever come and it's not only garbage, but it's still nowhere near as popular or as marketable. It's very unlikely that they'll ever go the same route as CN/Disney have and just make fucking cartoons, they have a very specific thing they want and will keep suckering creators and greenlighting projects until they get it (or don't).

i can't find any footage, does anyone have it

at least nickelodeon got new manegement

the concept art looks charming, but rarely is concept art a good indicator of what an actual series would be like

my first impression of the animatic was that the voice acting was awful. hoo boy i can't wait for the trend of creators casting themselves or their friends as voices to be over. just get a pro, it's worth it.

a good chunk of these are just pilots that nick passed on

Attached: 1495246797621.jpg (316x321, 32K)

Yeah, I don't want to hate on someone's passion project but I do have some inkling on why this wasn't accepted. The characters are a bit too old and the core group doesn't seem too appealing (to children). The main character uninteresting compared to the monsters and her design isn't very fun to look at. Female MCs are often tough sells to boys but this preference can be mitigated by making the female characters cool. This is why the main female character in the Lion Guard (Fuli) is a cheetah, to appeal to the boys watching because they respect speed. The female main character in this however doesn't have a cool design.

Ok, well little girls are open to female characters that aren't cool if they're cute or are wish fulfillment in another way. But the female MC isn't cute either and doesn't have powers or a lot of confidence so she doesn't appeal to boys OR girls. Unfortunately I think this design sensibility carries over to the rest of the cast but them being monsters means at their core they are still more interesting, at least on the surface.

This seems like a wonderful idea that would appeal to young teens who can appreciate designs and character dynamics that are more sophisticated. But even as someone who enjoyed the animatic I'd hesitate to say that *children* would be drawn to this.

In fairness I think they're stuck in a hard place irt advertisers. They need to get the right advertisers on board in order to justify ordering shows aimed at an older demographic and I suppose this isn't very easy to do.

Why do dumb boomers keep acting like boys don't want to watch cute/weird girls in cartoons like we didn't all have cute/weird waifus we'd watch a "girl show" for?

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding you. What part did you disagree with? If I had to restate what I wrote: Boys tend to prefer watching male characters. They don't dislike female characters as a a rule but tend to actively like female characters when they are 'cool'. Cool meaning a cool design or a cool character trait. Cool often correlates with 'attractive' in various ways. Boys can like cute girls but not all boys like cute girls at the same ages, some take longer, but all boys like cool. So cool female characters are a safer bet than frumpy or dorky looking female MCs.

I'm not sure where boomer fits into the reply? The creator of the animatic isn't a boomer. I think she's writing and designing for an older audience though. I think its easy for a lot of people to straight up forget what being a kid is like.

I think it's on Youtube as a test episode or something.

This look extremely politically charged and unwatchable.

OK... This pilot isn't grabbing me... It feels like just another overdone anime joinr trying to be bigger than it truly is and it's not even from Japan, making it even easier to ridicule.

Weebs will hate it and only teens (as in not little kids or adults who WILL likely be bored to tears by this, regardless of gender.) will be its only audience, especially if there's some damn good storytelling and character development to make it worth all the trouble. Provided, if course, this got made for real, which it clearly never is...

Harsh reality check of all checks is thst Nick needs all, amd I do mean, ALL the original ideas it can get (even if what's here has been done to death by now, especially in anime, but whatever!). Too bad this would be treated better somewhere else... Maybe CN or Disney, it better yet - find a streaming channel for it.

That's what this creator should have done, really. Find a streaming service to put it on.

I mean, it's pretty cliche & generic as fuck in its core premise and execution, but it would have still gotten some positive attention anywhere but Nick!

So is he and the main character going to get together?

Is this what it's like to have a ship?

judging by her preferences, i'd say it's more than likely

we will never see the romance arc of the tengu boy controlling his temper and the mc gaining more confidence

Attached: 6BC1025E-F5B0-4B81-A3A8-3495EB23840B.jpg (750x611, 175K)

I think that was the idea behind making the school all-ages, being able to use the kid characters’ problems and scenarios as the draw for the target audience but also being able to explore the type of relationships and character development that personally interests the creator.
I’m sure she would have kept getting notes and possibly would have been pushed towards making the kids more prominent in the pilot had the regime at Nick stayed the same, but I think the management changing was the biggest factor in this suddenly dying the water (they have not officially rejected or cancelled the project, it’s just been in total limbo for a couple years) - the biggest reason why Glitch Techs and the Rocko/Zim movies are being sat on is because the people currently in charge don’t want the people that came before them getting ANY credit for anything successful Nick makes. They’re going to make sure to treat them as badly as possible on purpose

Attached: 527FC65A-A821-431E-8E8B-4D43A958BF7B.jpg (2048x2048, 364K)

Attached: 8F04CADE-1D1F-46C7-A68D-EB18C6462324.png (800x700, 79K)

Really good concept art and ideas, but that never really show how the real product would be, and the pilot is kinda boring, while this could be better than anything Nicklelodeon has made in a decade I could see why there wasn't a rush to make this a series.

Attached: 6F17FFC5-52FB-4929-863C-B82F20E080AD.jpg (1080x1530, 222K)

You think if they used less generic monsters it would've been less cliché?
I mean I know kappa aren't common at all in western media but in japan they're not nearly as obscure.

Harpy Gee for one

>what if foreigners were monsters, and people who are phobic of them are wrong and just need education
so original

>Had a full series bible and thousands of concept art pieces but was never produced

that's the lion share of shows that Nick goes for.

They horde everything instead of producing or releasing.

Scared of failure and of the possible success of others.

That a couple of pitches from the El Tigre creator. Tons of stuff.

Same nigga

>>what if foreigners were monsters, and people who are phobic of them are absolutely correct and just need education on how to not get killed by monsters
Nothing to do with the Monsters Abroad but I would like a Monster High/Ghoul School sort of project that shows the monsters as dangerous as the term "monster" implies.

can we please stop humoring fujoshis that grew up on how to draw anime books?

The art style in this is very unique, It reminds me of those 80s comedy anime with the overly exaggerated faces. It's a breath of fresh air compared to the piles of bean-face garage we've been currently getting.

SEETHING

sneeding

They make up a large chunk of the people who are in animation schools right now, seeing as young men who are autistic enough to want to become animators have largely elected to become directionless NEETs due to the unaffordability of solo living and ample amount of distractions available to them in modern day life, while women with their typically higher levels of anxiety are too petrified with worry about their future and reputation to flunk out of school and tend to overachieve.
So it's unlikely they'll stop being "humored" when they're soon to make up a large part of the workforce

I'd love for it to become a full color YA graphic novel instead. Artist has chops for illustration and sequencing.

Has there been cases of companies handing the rights of series back over to creators? If it's one of those tax write-off scenarios like what happened with Sym-Bionic Titan then it's triple fucked.

As much as I love Anya's Ghost, which this artwork is giving me good vibes from, I know it'll never be adapted into animation.
I'd say let it be picked up as a cartoon first so we can have more content overall.

This is so bad, I can understand why they never made it a series.

School setting takes the fun out of monsters. Wether they are a predator who lurks among the populace to prey or a tragic being who is hunted by others for the circumstances of their birth, being other is important.

The latter is present in the pilot though, its just implied instead of stated outright.

Meh, Manga's a generic action manga in harem manga's clothing (anime's a generic fanservicy harem comedy)
